How do you feel about full body transplants?

A full body transplant would be taking someone's head and attaching it to a donor body, or a body made in the lab.

In my opinion this would be a great area to research, it could benefit a lot of people if it was possible.

Are you okay with it?

I disagree with it. (comment why) 9
I am fine with the idea. (comment why) 13

I saw a documentary on YouTube about a Russian scientist that does this with monkeys, it worked in that the monkey head and body survived the surgery but the monkey couldn't move its new body and he had a look on his face like he was literally in hell. Pretty cool though, maybe one day soon it'll be real.

No. Just because we can, doesn't mean we should. And how would muscle memory work? Regardless, our bodies are meant to die and decompose.

    • Isn't muscle memory stored in the spine or something? That could be a major setback for sure.

Our bodies are meant to die and decompose? What do you mean by that?

Not sure about the muscle, it was a passing thought.

Transplants of this nature could concievably keep a person alive forever. That is a horrible idea. Tinkering with nature needs it limits. I dont know how to enforce them or where to draw the line, but there should be boundaries here.

        • I don't think people would be able to stay alive forever this way. Maybe they would gain 30 years if they're lucky.

To live for a long time, one must keep the brain young, which seems impossible. We'd need to be able to transfer all the complexity of the brain into a more permanent medium. That would be really sci-fi, and really difficult if not impossible.

Hey, now there's an idea that would really make my wife and I very happy. Instead of 8 to 10 years more together, the sky's the limit. Yep, this one is a winner in my book. Where do I sign up?

    Ok.

I'm guessing "why not" would be the sheer complexity of it.

If regular organ transplants can fail and are extremely difficult and taxing on the body...

Plus the donor body would have to be available very shortly after death, in perfect condition, and also a total match.

Edit: Ugh I don't know why this wasn't posted as a reply.

    • Yep, if it was possible.

    Who would it benefit?

    • Maybe someone with multiple organ failure or persistent health problems. Transgender individuals too could benefit. Sounds like something out of a sci-fi movie, but why not?

I would have my brain transferred to a younger me using stem cells to make the connection to my spine and have all the wisdom I have gained combined with a young healthy body can't go wrong there

I'd say in special cases like people who are deformed should be able to do it, but in general know. We cant all look perfect, the world would be boring. Not to mention how much it would ruin sports like Track and Cross Country.

    • Why would it ruin some sports?

In Track and XCC Half the sport is building your body up. Some work out's like mile repeats are about as hard as the race. Dedicating your time and effort into it and training with your teammates is a large part of the experience. A lot of it is also about pushing your body to its limits then measuring it up to others. There are a couple books out their that can put it better then I can. Try Googling some running quotes then you might understand.

        • So you're worried people would skip the effort and transfer bodies instead? Maybe people who use non-natural methods would be put into a separate sporting category.

I think that would be a head transplant. Anyway, it don't see it happening in the near future due to the fact that we haven't found a way to join two sections of spinal cord on an injured person, let alone two spinal cords from two different people. But I believe I read something about a neurosurgeon in Italy that claimed he would be the first to do it.
