I think they can be VERY effective. Anti-depressants saved my life. However, they tend to be incorrectly prescribed. Anyone who has a bad day automatically gets put on a high amount of meds. People would think better of anti-depressants if doctors didn't prescribe them for every little bad day we've ever had. If you have severe depression, they can be VERY effective.
And every drug has its side effects. It comes down to whether you'd rather have some bad nausea or feel like you want to kill yourself every single day.
I think the people who say the drugs are dangerous and ineffective either don't have depression, or are hippies who believe you can cure clinical depression with flowers and rainbows and organic cow manure. The fact of the matter is, these drugs are highly effective if you're correctly prescribed them. Don't be so quick to knock them.

Every commercial advertising antidepressants says that they may cause worse depression and suicidal thoughts in teens and adults. It gets on my nerves so much. I mean HELLO, isn't that what they're supposed to work AGAINST? They're called ANTIdepressants, not PROdepressants.

They advertise that because antidepressants bring you up, and often when a severly depressed person is brought back up, instead of feeling good they will take the new energy as energy to commit suicide. That is why the commercials warn about it. When i was on celexa, I almost killed myself because I felt that I now had the ability to. I switched to Paxil a few months later and it made a huge difference, partly because I knew what to expect this time and partly because it is a stronger antidepresssant than celexa and mixed better with the chemicals in my brain.
They aren't right for everybody, I've seen some people get really effed up from them, and getting off of them sucks (i.e. bad withdrals), but they can really help.

    • All drugs have side effects, paracetamol can cause headache and nausea. I just find it weird that you guys have adverts fro antidepressants!! Is this in the USA?

I was thinking about going on antidepressants, but found that all-natural energy drinks actually help me for some reason.

I think all "laboratory" made medication has the potential to be dangerous. Natural remedies are the safest type of medicine.

I've never had antidepressants so I can say for sure if they are effective or not but they werent for the people I know had them. Besides, taking the pills prevented them from really trying to fix their problems.

Some just change your personality completely, which makes me depressed.

They certainly have their place and are great for some people. It is like any other drug, you have to weigh if the risks and side effects are worth the benefit. Everything you take should be evaluated in this way. It took me 10 different antidepressants before i found one that worked for me.

I used celexa for over a year and no side effects...the only side effect was that I got more depressed the first 10 days or so. I felt 'normal' after that and it didn't allow me to sink into deep depressions. it would always lift me up when I was on verge of getting depressed again

I was a frikkin guinnie pig for years. I was diagnosed as severely depressed when I was 13 and put on paxil. That was 1993 and the shit was pretty new and not meant for people under 18. It made me suicidal when I wasn't before. Finally found out I was bipolar. Then they put me on lithium, wellbutrin, depakote, and some other shit. In turn or paired, not all together. I had nausea, tremors, sleeplessness, weight fluctuations, dry mouth, and a lot of other added issues. I took myself off when I was 17 and 2 weeks later my mom said, 'wow it seems like they finally got your meds right, you seem better.' Ya I'm better mom, I took myself off :) The majority of the medical industry is bogus! People are kept alive on pills the as soon as they come off, they die. Its a money making scheme. '

It helps only if you want that medication to help. I am on celexa and it helps me. I was depressed for awhile. Due to my ex cheated on me preg, then after I had my son, I had post pardum, then after that everything went down hill. As soon as I told my Dr. They gave me this, and it took a lift off my shoulder. It def helps, but I wouldn't over do it.

I think it's all about finding the right one. Some solutions work better for some people than for others. It's a little risky, but if one of them can help it's probably worth it.

I'm Bi-polar and my pisschiatrist won't let me take some. She says it's too dangerous that it would send me in manic phase or something.

None of them work. I've tried them and none of them work.

All trials except those run by the companies that make them have shown that they have no more effect than placebo. Therefore they do not work. That's it.

    • Have you actually had them before?

no. Obviously if someone takes them and believes they will work they will have a placebo effect. But there would be no difference to taking the anitdepressent and thinking that they will work to taking sugar pills that you think are antidepressents and thinking that they will work.

        • It's not really like that. When you start taking the drug it's like coming up on ecstasy. It affects the chemicals in your brain and it just stops you thinking all the time so it gives you a break from the bad things you think all the time thereby giving you room to get better. You can't really have an opinion on something you have never tried. It's ridiculous.
