How do you decrease a swollen toe?

Its not an ingrown toenail its just infected. I injured myself and now its swollen. How should I make the infection go away?

Unless you put ice on it within the first 24 hours it will stay like that forever unless you stick pins in it to alleviate the swelling. Sage water should help as well.

    2 options:

See a doctor or amputate with secateurs.

  • Is there an open wound? Or just internally damaged? Injured isn't very specific...

    • Like I pulled off the skin since the toenail was not growing correctly. The toe nail was growing across the top of my toe apposed to the side across. So I cut it off and so it was a gap of exposed skin. The swelling has went down and it stopped hurting but its still red. So I not sure if this is healthy or not but the pain is gone.

If your toe has been infected for at least the last 24 hours, then you are well on your way to losing it. Soon red streaks will creep up your foot from your toe if left untreated, and a day or so later, they will run up your leg to your crotch. This is the infection spreading.
By that time, your toe will stink horribly and this also will creep up your leg, with your leg swelling to the point of bursting. This is called gangrene and it frequently requires amputation to keep it from spreading through your system.
