How common is it to see black african people in australia?

Perhaps not the best site to ask this, but what the hell. Just asking out of curiosity. I would like to visit there one day and I'm black from the US. I know "black" is often used to refer to the aboriginal people, but I am referring to people with African ancestry either from Africa, the Caribbean, or other parts of the world. I know there are a lot of White South Africans there.

Help us keep this site organized and clean. Thanks!

It depends where you are. Some areas have a reasonable population of Africans.

I have never met a Caribbean person who lived here, but I'm sure they're around somewhere.

    • I'm guessing they are more common in the major cities such as Melbourne or Sydney?

Yeah, but not just major cities - anywhere that has a big industry that tends to recruit immigrants. Mining is one of them, and mining towns tend to be in random places in butt fuck nowhere

Not rare, but not what you’d call a large population of them.

They have african blacks obviously are way different from US blacks. Totally different cultures. But id i bet theres a good amount of blacks non the less since its realitively close to africa

I'm not Australian but I tried looking up some statistics. As far as the resident population goes, actual black Africans seem relatively uncommon

I don't think they're that common. I'm not super up to date on my Australian demographics, but I think the minorities there are primarily Chinese and abos. They had a whites only immigration policy for quite a long time as well.

Not the OP and somewhat related question- What are they referred to in Australia? African-Australians? Black people? (I'm not trying to be funny). Sincere question.

Just as whatever country they have come from, or black. But the term "black fella" would only be used for an Indigenous person, even if their skin wasn't black.

Thanks. I've never heard the term "black fella". So you're saying rather than being called African-Australian a more specific term like Nigerian-Australian, or Ethiopian-Australian is used?

I imagine that those terms could be official terms, I'm not actually sure. But I've never heard anyone using those terms before. Aussies aren't known for their formality.

I think referring to someone as African is way too vague. It's an entire continent. Usually when I've met people from Africa they have introduced themselves as Nigerian, Somalian, Egyptian etc.

Funnily enough, Aussies will refer to someone as "european", but I think that's just because they think of Europe as being so small, where as Africa is obviously massive.

Yeah it's best to start with who isn't a South African really.

I guess it's another wealthy, English speaking southern hemisphere country. So probably not as big a culture shock as moving somewhere else.
