How are people “locked up/in prison” able to still smoke cigarettes?

Maybe just watching too many prison tv shows/movies. But in some of them, I see some of the inmates actually smoking cigs while being locked up in jail? How is that possible? I mean, I know jails have jobs for inmates where they can work and make small wages there I think? But how would they go about paying for Cigs? Sorry, just I’m new to this topic and never have served time or been locked up, so don’t really have any knowledge about how prison life works? Thanks.

Help us keep this site organized and clean. Thanks!

I'd be more concerned with how did they light the cigs??

With a power point and liquids.

      With a lighter.

      With matches.

      All kinds of shit.

Some prisons let you smoke and some let you have sex with your wife like once every 6 months. Other than that you have corrupt guards that let you smoke cigarettes. Guards make money off of bringing in contraband.

Frankly I'm kind of surprised no one made a joke about having sex with their wife only once every 6 months anyway

I know I hate when no one takes the low hanging fruit. This chic at work was bitching about how all the guys piss out in the yard and she has "seen more penises out there than shes seen her entire life." I wanted to say "I seriously doubt that" but ya know work n sheet. Bothers me to this day...

I just assumed it's in the prison commissary (store) same reason why freeze dried ramen is so common.

But upon further research its banned. Street value for 3 cigarettes is 40 dollars in prison which given the value to weight ratio is a good enough to try to smuggle through.

If I had my own little prison itll probably look a lot like swedish prisons. Better to pacify prisoners with bread and circus than to incentivise creative thinking.

Hard part is to implement it in a way that it cannot be used as a weapon or be able to hide shit in it.

Guards likely bring substances in and let the inmates have them. There was a local prison by me that got in trouble for guards bringing in drugs. One of my own family members went in while addicted and came out years later still addicted, so yeah it's possible to pass around not only cigarettes but also drugs

In Canadian prison they discourage temporary tatoos

Now I'm picturing a bunch of big, burly inmates applying peel-off temporary tattoos to each other's backs

Go to youtube and lookup Larry Lawton. Guy was an ex-jewel thief and a really good one at that. Served his time, now he's trying to help people stay out of prison. He has made a lot of videos about prison life.

You'd be shocked to learn how much contraband goes through a prison. Food, cigarettes, drugs, mobile phones, alcohol, weapons... it's a mini-economy in there. They even make their own wine... illegally.

In the US, cigarettes have been banned in the prison system for quite some time. You used to just be able to buy them from the commissary/prison store.

These days, I believe inmates use stamps or stamp books as a form of makeshift currency. There's plenty of ways to make lighters or fires in a prison and equally as many ways for the cigarettes (or other illegal things) to get smuggled in. I recommend watching Larry Lawton on YouTube if you're actually curious about some of this stuff.

Here you just buy cigarettes from the shop
People on the outside put money on your account or you use what you earn working inside
