How annoying are lit open signs on closed businesses?

It's one of my pet peeves when I drive by some place and I see the lit OPEN sign, thinking, oh, they're open.. just to go back, park my car and realize that the incompetent phuqs left their OPEN sign on after they went home.. IT's actually pretty common, which actually defeats the purpose of businesses buying those signs (I'm sure they're not cheap) because so many have cried wolf that I practically disregard them anymore. Has this happened to you very many times? Please comment.

The Christmas before last, I was desperate to escape the city (long, tedious and utterly depressing story which I won't tell) and walked seven miles into the city (no buses running) to catch a train to anywhere but here. There was a huge sign at the entrance saying that the station was closed for Christmas and Boxing Day and that no trains were running. The only person around was a cleaner. As I turned away, deciding to walk wherever I'd end up, I honestly heard someone ask the cleaner, "So, is the station closed, then?"

Yes when I walked by a store the sign said 'open' but all the lights were off and nobody was around.

It is an annoyance, but I have learned interior lights being on is a bigger indicator of a store being open/closed. Someone working there just wanted to get the hell home like the rest of us and forgot to switch the sign off amongst a zillion other duties. I may be sympathetic because I have worked the closing shift and you are swamped with things that MUST be done at closing time, and switching a sign off is way down the list.

Makes me laugh when they forget to turn them off.

Can't you tell if the lights are on?

not necessarily.. and sometimes places have their lights on at night. Like bars are all enclosed so u can't tell plus they're dark inside anyway.

I will sometimes drive by our family store at 11pm and see our open sign on. I get really pissed off. One time I asked my brother (who is supposed to be responsible for turning it off) why the hell I drove by at midnight and it was on. He said he forgot and by the time he got to his car and turned around and saw it was on, he was closer to his car so he didn't bother. Wow! That shows you how lazy he is. Having a jewelry store open at midnight is a huge liabilty, our only customers would be thieves!

But yes, huge pet peeve of mine as well.
