Horrible fear of needles

I have the worst fear of needles anyone has ever seen. When I see a needle or smell alchohol wipe I almost begin to cry, and I am a male. Is it normal to have this bad of a needlephobia?

I'm 21 and male. I'm fine with every injury, illness, or wound out there. I can watch an autopsy and eat at the same time. I've seen a 3rd degree burn with push and blood leaking around exposed bone, and didn't even flinch. But if I even see a syringe or an image of one being used I become physically ill and have my adrenal glands go into overdrive. Last time I had a shot I had to render myself nearly unconscious beforehand... and still threw up things I don't even remember eating. Truthfully I'd be more comfortable having the immunization dumped into an incision.

I'm in my mid-30s and I'm still terrified of syringes. Whenever I get my blood drawn, I have to look away. Same with getting a shot.. If I see the needle first, I freak out and usually can't go through with it.

    And, I'm male.

Do you know how they treat phobia's? By exposing the person to the thing they are most afraid of. And let me tell you, it works.

I was just like you. Then, many years ago, my boss at work roped me into (well, he guilted me into) donating blood. I went there and almost passed clean out when I saw the size of the needles they use to extract the blood. Anyway, I had promised I would do it, and sat there shitting myself while they prepared everything. Then, the strap went on my arm and the pulled it tight. The needle came towards me and I could do nothing but look away. I didn't even realise it had gone into my arm until I got brave enough to check and there it was, my blood pumping out into the bag, the needle safely in my arm. I felt nothing but a tickle. The needle is so sharp that you feel nothing at all. Once you have faced it, and made yourself brave enough to watch it being put in, which I can do now, you will no longer fear it. I thought to myself that if I could stand that huge needle, then I can handle any needle - most are so thin anyway. Just give it a bash and see if it works. But you are normal, this is a common fear, trust me.

Very Untrue... I have been suffering with this since I was 4 and I can tell you the pain many feel with this is actually multiplies. I am glad to hear that you got over this, but many of us would nor be even able to be in the same room with any needles. One of the problems many needle-phobes face is the fact that pain with needle is much higher than it should be.

Yeah, needles scare the fuck out of me. I think it has something to to with that one time when I was 7 when I accidentally got a needle (thread attached) shoved straight through my hand. Yeah, I'm not entirely sure how that happened.

I'm not afraid of needles, but I do understand your fear of sharp objects.

Totally normal, a lot of people hate needles. Personally I dont have a problem I kinda like getting shots. But I know a girl who might have it worse than you. Not only is she scared of them, if she ever gets a needle for any reason she will undoubtedly pass out within a few minutes, every time. Even when shes laying down.

I've had needles go up my butt since I was a little kid. Kinda got used to them after my dad yelled at me once I was 6.

Now I donate blood once every three months and have this HUGE 2mm needle stuck up my arm >:D

yeah i used to have that same problem- except seeing needles and the smell of rubbing alcohol just made me queasy and getting a shot just made me a little lightheaded. i decided to give blood to get over my fear like the 1st commenter, but after the needle went in i nearly passed out. i told the nurse i was trying to get over my fear and she almost took the needle out since i looked so sick- but i stopped her. bad idea- i sat there for an hour completely lifeless and feeling dead with a side of nausea. now just thinking of needles or getting shots makes me feel woozy. i feel your pain.
