Hitting a little girls bike...

Okay so my dad lives in an apartment complex. I was told by some of the tenets that i couldn't park in a parking spot because their reserved for the people living their. One of the ladies told me to park on the side of the complex. So thats what i do. Well today i went to my dads to visit him. After awhile i decided to go back to my house. I got in my car and went to drive away, when all of the sudden i heard a loud screeching noise. I got out of my car, and to my suprise their was a little girls bike laying under my car. (It wasn't really damaged, just some of the plastic from the side of the bike came off)

Anyway, the lady came outside with her grand-daughters and i said
"Is this there bike?"
She said "Yes"
so i said "Well, im sorry. I didnt know that there was a bike laying right in front of my car."
The lady said "Well where you park isn't a parking spot."
I said " Well all the other women told me to park here since im just a visitor"
And finally she said " Oh. Okay well sorry girls."

I felt bad for messing the little girls bike up a little bit, but the bike was laying on the ground RIGHT IN FRONT of my car so i didnt even see it.

Is it normal that i feel bad even though it wasn't my fault? :L

Did you put the kid in your van? If so, how much you want for her?

I wouldn't feel bad. I mean, despite what Parrish said, however, if she cared about the bike that much, she would not have left it in the damned street where it could have been hit or stolen.

Sorry to say it, but it was your fault. The law states that you must check around all 4 sides of your car for objects before getting into your car and pulling away. It's in the driver's manuel. If they wanted to call the cops about it, they would have found you to be at fault.

I'm not sure if you live in the state of Illinois, but i checked with the local drivers union center and they said as long as i was in a designated spot, then it wasn't my fault. (Which i was) The little girls bike was right literally right in front of my car. i didnt even know it was their.

No I don't live in Illinois. But you said in your story that you were not in a parking spot?

No, the woman told her that it wasn't a parking spot.

It's not normal you weren't observant enough to notice the bike.
