High-pitched television sounds: is it normal to hear them?

Is it normal to be able to hear an extremely high-pitched, mosquito-like sound whenever someone turns the television on? Is it normal to be able to tell if the TV is on in another room by that sound, even if the TV is on mute? Is it normal to sometimes get headaches from prolonged exposure to the sound?

It's really, REALLY annoying and some television sets are worse/louder than others. I can also hear it whenever certain computers are on, particularly older ones. What The Fudgies is this sound??? And why is it so annoying? Can anybody else hear it?

When I was a kid, I'd ask what that whistle was. On a CRT TV or monitor, it's from the flyback transformer. On older TVs, the picture is drawn 30 times a second with 500 lines and it's the flyback circuit's job to draw a line from one side to the other and then fly back to the opposite side of the screen to draw the next line. So it operates at 15,000 cycles (15 kHz--all figures approximate). If you can hear that, you have good hearing. As your hearing goes, your upper limit gets lower. Take care of your hearing. Loud machinery, music and gunfire are the worst. Earlier generations had manual typewriters and pipe organs and I know a woman who lost her hearing to them. Ear buds are taking this generation's hearing, though. If you don't protect it, you never get it back.

Normal, older CRT TVs (and older CRT computer monitors) produce high frequency sounds. Most people don't hear it but it is normal if you do.

The sound you hear comes from picture tube of your tv. I guess you are around 20 yrs to be able 2 hear it and get annoyed. Older people usually cannot hear it (When its a new tv).
Its because As ones age increases, he/she loses the hearing capacity and cannot hear sounds from a high frequency. Thus it may be possible that your parents cannot hear it.

The headache is also normal because of that. If you are in a trouble, let the mechanic know about it or switch to a LCD or CRT tv. they dont create such sounds.

basically all electronic devices emit SOME sort of high pitched noise. I hear my TV and computer all the time.

Yeah, I hear those too. Right now I can hear the whine of my laptop (newer, lcd screen) loud and clear.
It's good to know that other people can also hear iPods and smaller electronic devices too, although I must say I'm glad that I don't get headaches from those.
