Hidden friendlist on facebook

I've always wondered why people hide their friendlist on facebook. I agree with having it only visible to friends because its really easy to figure out things about someone like where they live etc by going through their friendlist so you dont wanna risk a stranger doing that, but why having it set to private even from your facebook friends? Why is it a secret which other people you know?It makes me a little suspicious when someone im talking to has such info hidden.

Well because people don't want you to snoop.

Some people just don't want to share. It's their Facebook page and they can do whatever they want with it.

Part of me wonders if this is Mr Wedding Crasher but the tone feels too polite.

I love it. It would be so much harder to cheat on my wife if I couldn't do that

I hide most info on fb. I like having the account because it's useful to buy/sell second hand stuff, and I hear about community events and parent groups through Facebook. I also like using the messenger function to contact people and make groups when I'm throwing a party or organising something. It doesn't mean I want to share a load of details about my private life. If you are my friend then you probably already know who my other friends are without needing to read about it online.

I think most people don't notice or care about what they can see on your Facebook page. It isn't real life.

Just because someone is on my friends list doesn’t mean they’re my friend. I don’t want them working out where I went to school or uni or where I’ve worked, it’s not their business to know.

    • Why would you add someone who isn't your friend?
It kind of contradicts being a private person.

A fair question, I joined Facebook back in 2009 at the naïve age of 13 and at that time (as you may remember?) most people didn’t understand the importance of online privacy so I added anyone and everyone I knew in real life. I would even add random people who shared mutual friends with me because their lives looked interesting and I wanted to stalk them. With age I became much more selective in who I accepted and flirted with the idea of mass-deleting all the people I would not want to have a conversation with but the honest reason I didn’t was that too many of my Facebook “friend’s” profiles are goldmines of trashy and embarrassing content. I said that people are more careful about what they share these days, but these clowns never got the memo, off the top of my head I have found nudes, confessions of illegal substances and horribly drawn furry art shared shamelessly on their profiles. It’s my own personal nostalgic circus, so that’s why I chose to hide my friend’s list.

I have my account on the strictest privacy settings, but have never seen an option to specifically hide the friends list, so maybe it just comes with certain privacy settings? Not sure. I don't really care about friends seeing who I'm friends with, though.

    • That make sense... How do you find the strictest setting?

I just went through each privacy setting and set it all to the strictest setting. It has been awhile since I've done it. Everything that can be set to Friends Only or Private is, and I have it to where only friends of friends can send me friend requests (since I used to get a lot of creeps, fake profiles, scammers, etc. trying to send me friend requests).

I voted no. I meant that it's not normal for you to care. Why do you care?

A private friend list can signal nefarious intents. If think you about it, people that use Facebook to snoop (like NSA operatives) would not want you to know their personal network.
