Here's the situation: so you got 2 gallons of milk...

... and your getting pretty thirsty. One gallon you purchased a little while back before you got the newer one. The older one is only a couple of days before its expiration and its quality is starting to diminish. Will you drink from the older one? Or would you want the newer milk for its better quality? Drinking the newer one will leave the other carton to spoil, but by the time you finish the older gallon the newer gallons quality will already diminish greatly.

WHAT DO YOU DO?!!

I'll drink the older milk. 75
I'll drink the newer milk. 51
Nothing, I'm lactose intolerant you insensitive ass. 17

Milk does not spoil gradually. At least not as far as I can tell. It's either sour or not. I'll drink the old stuff until it goes bad, then the same goes for the new stuff. It'd be a waste.....

Why am I even commenting on this?

Drink the older milk because you shouldn't let anything go to waste. Especially food! Then if you can't drink all of the newer milk in time, give it to someone who could.

If the older milk is going bad then it's time to dump it. Just because it's not "expired" yet doesn't mean it can't go bad. If you leave it out for too long for example, it will go bad before the expiration date.

Therefore it's OK to dump it and open the newer milk.

  • What "I" would do would be to turn down the temperature in my refrigerator to make it cold enough to keep everything really cold but not frozen. I would then take my older gallon of milk and use all of it in baking (and other) recipes that require milk. Once my treats cool, I would wrap some in Saran Wrap and freeze them for a while. This baking/cooking with the older milk would take just a few hours. Now that I have the older gallon of milk taken care of, I would enjoy my new, chilled gallon of milk that very same day. That is, if I drank milk.

I'll drink the older milk if I'm in the desert with nothing else to drink (and save newer for later). Otherwise I wouldn't drink milk at all.
