Here's the scenario...

Okay, so you're stranded on a deserted cliff island somewhere in the middle of the pacific ocean. You somehow come to a scenario where, on opposite sides of the cliff is some guy you don't even know and a cell phone both hanging precariously and are about to fall.

Details:
~You can only run and save either the cell phone or the person and it is an absolute gaurantee that the other would fall if you don't save it at that very moment.
~The cell phone is 100% gauranteed to work and has full connnection bars and whatnot to anywhere.
~There are only a few coconut trees on the island and you are completely surrounded by cliffs that fall into rocks. Your chance of survival with the person is only around 30%.
~Nobody is looking for you or the random person.
~You have absolutely no feelings for this random person. S/he is not attractive or unattractive, vulnerable-looking, etc. You also have no idea of what this person has ever done with his/her life or if s/he even has a criminal record.

Keep in mind that there is no other surefire way to get off this island execpt using the phone. Also, if the person falls, then the person will die. If the phone falls, then it is inaccesible.

What, in all honestly, would you do?

Save the person. 19

    I would run over and kick the guy off that was holding on, enjoying the entertainment of his fall to death. Then I would take the cell phone and throw it off as well. Fuck getting saved. Society sucks anyway. And any people who came looking for me I would hide from them and throw coconuts at them aiming for their heads.

    I would save the person.

    My reasoning is that if the cell phone could get perfect reception then chances are civilization isn't far away, and maybe we would be able to escape the island easier if there were two of us working together.

    If its a girl i wouldnt even consider the phone idk just always protect women i get along with em better anyway but id save a guy too. Theres always a chance to survive or get off the island later and if they try something well i'll take em out.

    Ok, here goes, save the phone booth, call the last place where I lived and tell whom it may concern that im fucked, eat the dumbass who fell off the cliff when I get hungry(I know to start with the ass, ive watched Alive), have sex with a volleyball, then build a raft out of the phone booth and sail to saftey or till I get eaten by a shark either or, suck on that Tom Hanks.

    OTHER:

    I save the person, then guilt-trip them into trying to recover the phone.
    If they die trying, my chances of surviving on coconuts go back up.

        I just saved their fucking live, so the LEAST they can do is TRY and get that phone...or die trying, no matter how "inaccesible" it seems to be.

          So you're going to save the other person, then send them on an impossible mission to get an inaccessible phone? And they may die in the process anyway?

          At least choose to let them die in the first place, that way you get the phone.

            na. the point is:

            I am not omniscient.

            I may ASSUME that the other person will hold on while i get the phone. I may ASSUME that the phone will fall if i rescue the person. I may ASSUME that the phone will be destroyed if it falls.

            But i could not know. And if i choose the phone in the first place, i'd feel guilty for the way i put my priorities. If, however, i choose the person, resulting in our mutual chance for survival going down, the ball will be in "their" field. They just got a gift of live and pretty damn should do anything they can to make sure my decision was not in vain. Even if that means risking their own life to get us saved. It's not that i'd "send" them to their sure death out of some perverse motivation, it's more that i feel it's their responsibility to try. If the phone clearly shattered, well, we'll take our chances from there. If it's just "inaccessible", it'll be his/her job to MAKE it accessible, even if that means to chisel a stair into the island by stone-age-tools.

            If you want to, i choose:
            "Screw everything I just typed and still try to save both.", only i accept i may not be able to do so, but putting THEIR life at stake in the process, after saving it first. I bought them a CHANCE, if you so want, they better fight for it.

              It's true that the OP didn't state that we knew all these outcomes, but why did he bother telling us if we can't use that knowledge to our advantage?

              Maybe he just wanted to find out what people would do if they somehow KNEW for sure what all the possible outcomes could be.

    i would try and save both LOL.. nothing's impossible. WHOKNOWS what will happen.. at least i don't have the person's death on my conscience as at least i tried

    I would save the person. Whether I know them or not, its still a human life. Plus I wouldn't be so lonely being stuck there...hell, maybe we can populated the island while we're at it! XD

    I have family so someone would be looking for me for sure. And if they weren't, the bill collectors would probably find me.

    But to go by your details, I'd grab the phone. Then I'd have to decide how I wanted to use it. I might not want to be rescued. maybe I'd just tell my husband and kids where I am and we could all live on the island in total peace. I would have him steal a luxury yacht and bring all kinds of supplies. Sounds ideal to me.
