Troll comments thumbed up!? What the fuck is up with that? The helpful comments sometimes get like -3 and malicious trolls get +3???

Hmm. It's not a very helpful comment, but you just have to put less stock in thumbs. I think the best way to use them is to show solidarity with comments you think are good, and distance from comments you don't think are good. I don't think most OPs use the thumbs as a way of seeing which comments are most helpful, because most helpful is a very individual thing.
I've never thumbed any comments down. I can't; I can only thumb up, for some reason. But I've thumbed up a few trolls that I found funny. It's possible what some would consider malicious don't seem so bad to me -- I might've up-voted them because I thought they were funny.
I haven't noticed too many helpful comments being thumbed down, but I'm sure it's not too big a deal, either. It's probably just a thumbs troll looking to get a reaction. I've done that in the past on other sites. I would laugh if I saw something like this popup on that site while I was being thumbs troll.
Really haven't noticed that. Things that I see getting thumbed down are either trolling, mean spirited or at least controversial. And conversely the best rated comment is often more humorous than useful, but that's not really the same thing as trolling.
I wouldn't give the thumb system too much credence. Sometimes I'll get thumbed up for random crap and thumbed down for legit advice. Democracy is flawed. *cough* g-dub, nuff said.
