Help? reading my little sisters diary!!

The other day, I cleaned my 11 year old sisters room and I picked her diary up from the floor and ' dropped it ' it opened up on a page with the title * my weight *

It had a bunch of dates and stuff, and yesterday ( 31/5/14 ) she weighed 7.4 stone.

I'm not sure if thats bad or not. She is pretty tall, with long legs.

Is it normal to be 11 and be that heavy??

I think the more pressing issue is that she's 11 and keeping a diary of her weight

That's about the age most girls worry about their bodies and soon grow eating disorders. I know she'll be mad, but tell your parents. This doesn't need to progress.

Why do I feel like this post is made by said 11 year old trying to disguise themselves as they fear they are too young/may get banned from this site? Either way, that is not fat unless she's extremely extremely short/petite. At 11 years of age, I think I was probably 8 stone and I was a size small at 5'1. So if she's about that, she's probably very thin.

This behaviour is obsessive, she needs to be helped before she develops a full blown eating disorder. Weighing herself everyday isn't healthy and keeping a record of it is even worse. You need to tell her that everyone gains a lot of weight in puberty, it's normal and doesn't mean she's getting fat.

    Good luck.

How tall is she? If she's at least 5 feet tall it sounds completely normal.

According to the BMI, if she's over 5'2" she'd be considered underweight, if she's under 4'7" she'd be overweight.

But a little on either side isn't anything to freak out about.

Body image issues can set in - in fact often do set in - that early. NO 11 year old is fat. At that age both boys and girls should be eating healthy, balanced meals, not counting calories.

As the older brother of a 12 year old sister, I think I would definitely be concerned if I saw what you saw. It will feel like betrayal if she knows you saw her diary, so maybe your parents would be amenable to playing the "bad guy", but I really think that, if I discovered that my sister was keeping a weight diary, I would be very concerned and I hope I'd tell my parents about it or otherwise try to help.

Just remember, no matter how much loyalty you might feel about revealing private info on your sister, doing nothing helps no one, and catching these kinda of issues early can prevent problems, like anorexia, from developing before they become chronic.

If you're concerned or she says anything alarming, such as mentioning diets or wight loss, or noticeably loses weight speak to her. My little sister had anorexia and we found diaries of her weight and anxieties from when she was about 9. Make sure your sister knows what's healthy and what's not. The uncomfortable topic worth her health and wellbeing.

It is best you speak to your parents about this as there is an opportunity to nip this in the bud without too much collateral. Unfortunately if this is not dealt with promptly as SkullsNRoses said, this can lead to an eating disorder and potentially death.

But remember to tell your parents to trend lightly on such a delicate issue. If approached the wrong way it could further push her deeper into her issue and drive her habit underground. She potentially has a low self esteem so don't turn this into a diss fest.
