Help! my girlfriend is a vegan!

I've been dating this really nice girl for a few months now. Only one problem, she's a strict vegan!

It's really hard for us to share a meal together because she can't seem to eat anything on any menu anywhere. If it was just no meats, that would be okay, but she also does no milk, dairy, eggs - any product of an animal.

A lot of times I will ask her to chose a place and I'd be happy to eat whatever she's having, but she won't go for that! She makes me choose something to eat for me and then she has to try to invent something off of the menu that works for her. One time I ordered a full meal and all she had was the free bread!

I often take my vegan girlfriend to restaurants where I eat meat. She tends to look at me with tears rolling down her cheeks and exclaim "ENJOYING YOUR FOOD, MURDERER?"

I wish she'd forget about the time I shot her mum...

Google: Vegan restaurants in (wherever you are).

    Boom.

Have you tried looking at many different cookbooks? Maybe you two could find a bunch of recipes to eat together. And perhaps you could write out a Weekly Menu so you can assign each meal on a different day so you won't have to struggle with trying to find too many dishes.

    • That's an interesting idea. But I don't think we're at the point where we can comfortably cook for each other over the course of a week.

I have thought about asking her to cook one of her vegan meals for us, which would be a start, but she doesn't seem to want to talk about food much at all.

        Perhaps an underlying eating disorder...

        • I worry about that too, but it's something I'd have to approach delicately. It's not like she's wasting away or anything though, so I'm just going to sit on that one.

If I notice that she's losing a lot of weight then I'll bring that concern out front again.

Try Happy Cow. They list all the vegan and vegetarian restaurants you could ever ask for.

Just let her do her own thing and do your own thing. If you really like her it will work out. My personal thought is, she will probably give up being vegan when she gets anemia or her hair starts falling out...humans aren't meant to be strict vegetarians we don't have four stomachs like cows and we have canines.
I went on a weird diet once that was really restrictive and it made me sick and weak. Good luck.

Go out for Indian food. They have lots of dishes that are meat and dairy free. A lot of asian places will be easy to accommodate her as well. Even an italian place will have at least one vegan option.

    You have lots of options.

The internet is a great place to find vegan recipes. I eat meat, but seriously, vegan recipes can be awesome.

If God didn't want us to eat animals he wouldn't have made them out of meat.

Sorry, I think you two are completely incompatible. I can't imagine this relationship going anywhere at all, if she maintains the vegan thing. We do not allow vegans to charter our boat at any price, I repeat, at any price. It is just too hard to please them (and we do like our customers to go away feeling like they've had the best vacation of their lives) and frankly it is very uncomfortable for me personally, to be around them.
In general most vegans I have met are much like born again christians, always trying to extol the virtues of their thing. I've no interest in either (bring out that pork roast, please or hey, how about a Turducken?).

What gives you the right to say they're incompatible because they have a disagreement over food?

Hey, the guy asked for help and I replied with my opinion. What's wrong with that? He asked, did he not? Have you ever lived with a vegan, but not eaten as they do? It requires two completely different styles of food buying, preparation and a great deal more cooking time. If you live with someone, that's a HUGE thing, and relationships are difficult enough without adding all that over food. Hell, the logistics of sitting down to a romantic candle lit dinner for two, with two completely separate menus (cooked at home), would be incredibly difficult.
For you to say my comment is ignorant is just not right and to swear at me for my solicited opinion if very low class.

If a relationship was to end because the cooking was a bit complicated. Then you shouldn't be in a relationship in the first place.

Ps. I'll swear at who I want

It doesn't seem complicated to me. She made her choise to live a complex lifestyle, she'll have to deal with it. Which she is. OP is the one being kinda picky. Apparently she doesn't care that she isn't eating much when they're out. He should focus on other places and they can eat before they go out.
As for separate meals, it really isn't a big deal. On the rare occasion there's a candlelit dinner, something can be arranged. Most people don't eat nice dinners frequently. For daily meals, whatever both can have plus a separate main dish is pretty simple.
I can see how this could be complicated on a boat, but it isn't a difficult living situation.

I dont understand why this is so difficult. I mean why not have something like wine and pasta if its a fancy restaurant or maybe Soda and a salad(No chicken) at a McDonald. I could think of a lot of combinations of food she could eat even when eating out. Maybe your just not trying hard enough? I am not even vegan but I could probably think of a vegan diet even for eating out.

Whenever I go out I have a jacket potato. I'm vegan and there's nothing to eat on the menu. I don't even like jacket potato. And obviously I have to ask for no butter. Just think how hard it is for her.
P.S doesn't it show how much people rely upon animals? It's disgusting.
P.P.S all the comments above are talking about canine teeth and our stomachs. It's proved that our stomachs digest plants and plant-based stuff better than meat. Plus our canines aren't really canines- have you ever seen a lion?

    • That's nice, but she's history now. I haven't seen or spoken to her in over 18 months.

I learned my lesson. No more vegans. Too much trouble.

I've heard this excuse so many times. The human body can eat and digest lots of things. It can also chew up and digest other humans. Just because we can do something doesn't mean we must do something.

Also, FYI our 'canine teeth' are canine in name only, they are not like the teeth of actual canines like Lions, Tigers etc.

just fyi I did try being vegetarian for a while because I thought it would improve my health...and it didn't! Maybe I didn't do it "right" or whatever but I feel best when including meat. If you like being vegan that's fine but PLEEZE don't try to make your cat or dog vegan. I heard of this guy who fed his dog tofu until one night, the dog ate his foot off!
