    Coz it's not long after Christmas and they're talking about their credit card bills etc.

    It is a normal occurance. Humans tend to notice certain things they "like" to notice. Just as hearing your own name, because it is the most personal thing you got.
    Or when you own a car, for example a red camaro. and since you bought this car, you see red camaros driving everywhere.

    People usually react when they her their name. You may be hearing some words similar to Chris and you react by looking up or whatever. It's common,
