Have you feared for a friend's unborn childs future safety?

A friend of mine is pregnant, and I honestly fear for the baby once it's born. She's lazy, messy, irresponsible and sleeps till late afternoon. She had a couple cats that ended up dead in her apartment. SHe has no family anywhere near her to help, and she's pretty young, and single. She doesn't know anyhting about nutrition or babyproofing, she has terrible habits of leaving things out or open. And dirty! She doesn't take proper care of herself, like brushing teeth regularly and such.

I know people can make miraculous changes upon the birth of their child, and I hope this will be true for her. I just can't shake this fear for the baby though!

I'm going to help her as much as I can if she needs it, but I don't live right near her, and I do have my own kids and life....so.....

Have you ever felt this fear for a friends baby?

Please comment as to what happened with your friend and the baby, good or bad.

Meh. If it dies it dies. No big loss.

    • Well I encouraged her to have an abortion from day 1 so if it dies as a real BORN human being, then I'd feel a bit of a loss here since I tried to help her (and it) before it got to that point. She insisted, she had to have it...it's due soon so we'll see.

Yeah, true. Got my fingers crossed for you and her that she does the right thing.

  • I have this feeling like I want to adopt it!! I doubt she would go for that but, you never know.

If she's a terrible mother, then it's better to have no mother at all.

  • It's a tragedy when it happens but what you can do?

  • My sister-in-law is very self-serving and lazy. She's had two kids and neither of them changed this aspect of her personality.

I had a friend who did heroin throughout her last pregnancy. Somehow the baby is ok. I wasn't in contact with her while she was pregnant because she disgusted me with her carelessness and selfishness.

    • Contrary to what you'd be led to believe, heroin doesn't cause any birth defects. Go ahead, google it, it's true.

I worry about it, but I cant accept responsibility for other people, and you shouldnt either. Its hard when its the kid - all you can do is be supportive.

I'm currently going through this. The baby hasn't been born yet and, to be fair, I like the mother very much and think she'll do very well. The father (my friend) is another kettle of fish. I'm just hoping he doesn't screw the baby up too much.
