Have you ever subverted an is it normal poll or story?

Have you ever answered an is it normal poll or story that asks if it's normal to do something, applied it to yourself, and answered in a way to make yourself seem either normal or abnormal?

As opposed to answering the story with respect to the OP, as it was intended.

  • You mean give a fake answer?

No, but I do keep certain things back or just don't say anything at all.

People have died for saying the wrong thing. Our words have great power. Guard them carefully.

I think he means something like this:

OP: "Is it normal I never talk to my sister anymore?"

You: "I never to talk to my sister, so yeah, it's normal"

He means whether you compare the questions to your own life to decide whether or not a situation is normal, instead of comparing it to the life to the 'average joe'.

but i think thats the whole point of IIN.

If, say 70% of people believe its NOT normal to like, for sake of example, chocolate, and vote that way, the poll will come out as 70% "It is not normal".

That is NOT representative of the(again, for sake of example) 65% of people who in fact DO like chocolate.

If everybody voted according to their own believes, we would come up with an astounding 65% "it is normal", which is representative of the true fact that, yes, 65% think and act that way, making it normal for 2/3rds of the people.

If everybody instead voted what they THINK the average joe may think, then you would quite possible end up with 70+% "not normal", totally not representing the 2/3rds that actually make it normal.

Know what i mean? This page _CAN_ only work properly and give surprising results if EVERYBODY votes based ont heir own personal views. Through the number of voters, eventually a pattern will emerge that is representative of the real life situation and untainted by what people think that people think.

I think he means that you lie.
Like Op:Is it normal I never talk my sister anymore
You:Nonsense I always talk to my sister and love her very much. Spend more time with your family(You really never see your sister but you did not want to seem like a bad person)

or "I never talk to my sister, and I don't think that's normal, so no, it isn't normal".

It's a lot easier applying scenarios to yourself than someone you've never met. What's wrong with that? Unless you're not being honest to yourself, and choosing an answer to suit your predetermined beliefs. Maybe that specifically is what the OP was getting at?

I see people do this all the time, it's normal:P.

I always feel uncomfortable calling someone's behaviour "normal" or "abnormal". It just feels a bit wrong to me. Which is why I sort of relate it to myself sometimes just to give my comment some context. I always try to make it clear that it's just my opinion, though, and nothing more. So I'm not really sure if that answers your question properly.

  • You should give an example or explain this better because it is difficult to tell what exactly it is that you are implying. Subverted? Subverted how exactly?

Do you mean you're wondering if people only share a personal experience in the comments, as opposed to addressing the OP's question, but do it in a way that is a lie to make themselves appear normal/abnormal?

Why not just ask if people exaggerate or lie about themselves in their comments? It's simple and understandable.

I like to share my thoughts and experiences on the subject, so, even if it dont answer the question, at least it may make them feel more or less normal, and know that they are not the only one in that situation.

    • Me too. I think that's a big part of this site. That we're not alone and like-minded people are out there. I'm glad you do it. It's part of what we are here for.

No, I would never lie on a question to make myself look better. Specially if its something I personally can relate to. I will answer the question as its asked.

If the OP knows the answer why are they making a poll. Secondly what’s the use of faking a answer if you want an honest outside opinion. Third I do not see why you are asking questions at all do you just like hearing yourself talk? Fourth are you a narcissist you seem to love yourself very much. Fifth it defeats the purpose of social communication aspect of the internet. Six THIS QUESTION IS DUMB. I made my point here.

Weird.. Why making a poll to fake answers?

  • GuessWho

It's best to answer in the sense of "Do you do this?"

If everyone that does answers 'yes' and everyone that doesn't answers 'no', then the votes will represent an accurate percentage of how normal something is.

All answers are to some extent, I believe, from your own personal experiences. Or if not experiences then your own thoughts.

Think of it this way. If someone on here posts "IIN that I do not believe in God", then of course all the atheists would most likely vote normal, people of other religions that have an open mind would also probably vote normal, but there is still that minority of some hard-core religion group that would vote not normal. We all have differing viewpoints, so every vote will come from our own viewpoint.

Even if a question asks something that you have never experienced, you still think to yourself, "would 'I' ever do that or do 'I' think it's weird". The key word being 'I' because let's face it, even when you do think your putting yourself in "someone else's shoes", you never really, truly are doing that.

Isn't that better than the people who just vote no if it's something amoral?

I don't think anyone can be truly objective. That's why there are so many people answering and not just one perfectly normal guy.

  • myboyfriendsbitch

I think that's the best way to answer, as long as the OP's details are regarded too. If it can't be answered in a personal way, then i think around as to whether i know a couple people with a similar experience, which, for me, would classify the situation as normal.

My life and personal experiences have not been entirely normal but I consider myself normal... as in if you asked someone who is fervent about individuality and not following the crowd, I would be considered your average sheep. I have a full time job, I study Business in college and I go to church and see my family every Sunday. I come home and cook dinner for my husband and we carpool to work and I hang out with a group of friends before classes start.

I spend my spare time on here, studying or watching Sci Fi. I don't have time for much else. I don't go occupy wall street, I don't get piercings or tattoos or protest society or think of new and unique ways to dress.
