One time I was debating picking up a hitchhiker, then changed my mind. I found out later on the news that she was killed on the road that night. So, I struggle with myself about the fact that I could've changed the outcome.

At the time, I changed my mind because it was midnight at the time. And it was a road I'd never seen anyone on before, so I thought it was odd to see someone walking there. When I looked back in the rear-view after passing her, I couldn't see the person's face so I got freaked out and thought it was a ghost! (Ala' 'Resurrection Mary') ...Boy was I wrong.

Yes I have hitchhiked in Bahrain, near Saudi Arabia. I am an american and it was not a wise choice - lucky to still be here. It is not in their culture to help me. When driving with this man in Bahrain, I sat next to him in the front. Everyone - I mean EVERYONE we passed stared like I had committed the worst crime. Apparently it was due to his head covering and the fact i was not supposed to sit next to him - or that I was a white young american girl. I do not know.

there's a big difference! because when you get on the car of an unknown , you're aware that he/ she might harm you! when you catch a bus or a train , you're not alone. you can ask for help if someone wants to hurt you. it's safer!

Yes, I have. Two very attractive girls in a sports car gave me a lift back to the "park and ride" after a total eclipse of the sun. When I boasted about this to my sister, she said, "They probably thought you wouldn't make it back on your own".

    Sisters, eh?

I hiked from sydney to melbourne, and the 3 guys that I risked a ride with all expected something sexual in return for their kindness..I loved the whole experience minus those men-which may I add I ran away from!..
So I decided against catching any rides after that which left me 2 weeks of walking and nothing bad happened. I think most drivers are more scared to pick up hikers too.

I picked up a hitchhiker one time. And I was very nervous about it. Very stupid move on my part, but I felt sorry for the guy. I am female, and a middle aged man with one leg came up to me saying he needed a ride to a bus stop. It was the one leg that made me do it. Once he got in my car though, I realized he was drunk also, and couldn't figure out which bus stop he needed. Took me a while to get him to the one he needed. Never again.

I have picked up hitchhikers and have hitchhiked myself. I kicked a guy out on the side of the highway for being creepy. I got picked up with this lady that was taking me to her house...she had a dog and a gun with her.

  • I've picked up hitchhikers, but I've never been a hitchhiker myself. (I'm female.)

For a few years, I lived in a city close to the town I grew up in. There are First Nations reserves in both places, and a lot of First Nations people tend to hitchhike between the two. If I knew them (not on a personal level, but I'd recognize their face), I would pick them up. They are good people.

I don't pick up anyone I don't know. If I know the hitchhiker then I might.

The closest I've ever gotten to hitchhiking was when I got in a car accident. I had to climb out of my car which was covered by like 4 feet of snow and a couple immediately stopped to pick me up and take me to the nearest town.
Otherwise, I guess I have a bias towards hitchhikers. I assume that if I'm hitchin' a ride then something in my life has gone wrong. It is probably only a exciting adventure if you are choosing it (and that if you really wanted to you could just as easily pay for a bus ticket).
