Have you ever been fired from your job?

By "fired", I mean you did something that your employer was not pleased with (you broke the rules) and your employment was effectively terminated.

I don't mean you lost your job because the company was downsizing, or you got pregnant, or became ill or injured (long-term).

Never. 55
Once: I did NOT deserve it. 13
Once: it was my fault, I deserved it. 12
Once: it was partially my fault, but my employer was to blame too. 7
More than once: each time I never deserved it. 6
More than once: each time it was my fault. 2
More than once: sometimes I deserved it, sometimes not. 8

    Yes and no.

My first job was a job at Dairy Queen. Other than eating the candy bits, I did fine and followed orders but I did not fit in with the social scene so the manager didn't give me hours being three days of work. She told me to call for more hours and every time I called, she told me to call back. So I stopped calling and I guess I got fired for that.

I have been fired from a few sites since working security. The first one was because I was a female. I found out from a friend that worked in management in the company, I wasn't supposed to know so I never said anything. The property manager told my manager to "fire all of the women", so my Site Supervisor got the pink slip too.

Next I worked at a medical center. I was given verbal orders, nothing written. The best way I can put my duties was ridiculous. The manager basically had me do everything that she didn't want to do and I angered a lot of people. I was removed because I "smoked too much". But I'm not stupid. I got a lot of complaints for carrying out my duties and the property manager wanted to cover her ass. She has since been fired.

The last place that I worked I was removed because of new management thinking that I wasn't smiley enough.

Most guards get moved from site to site every few months, though, until finding a post that agrees with them. I'm not blacklisted or anything in my company, I'm actually one of the better workers, so it's not a big deal. Security guards have to deal with a lot of politics sometimes. It sounds weird but... you know =/

I was fired from McDonalds because I was being held hostage by an ex boyfriend. When I escaped from psyco still in uniform and late for work. FIRED :( I was only 16 but now I think it was for the best. Psyco became suicidal and I have a much better career :)

  • No. More often than not I walk out over something silly that I later regret.

I took a job with a friend of my parents. My job was basically to cold call (both over the phone and in person) companies to sell them on our product. I was pretty good at it too. The owner (the friend of the parents) was never there, he was always on the road selling. Basically two people had my job, me and the husband of the office manager), I was much better and was blowing this dude out of the water in results. But the office manager was always complaining to the owner about me, saying I was late every day, saying I was stealing her husbands leads, pretty much anything she could think of. So one day I asked for a vacation day and she granted it. Then told the owner that I just no called no showed. I pleaded my case but he told me that she'd been with him for 20 years and it'd be easier for me (who had only been there a few months) to move on.

On what was my last day working for a catering company providing staff at upper-class sporting events (horse races, golf, boat races et al); I rebelled a little on purpose.

I wore my favourite Buffalos and was told to change into shoes that didn't look like moon boots.
I couldn't do ties properly at the time - and still can't. I was told to sort it out by a member of staff.
After a stroppy exchange of words between us two and a colleague doing my tie for me, I loudly said "You bitch." and one of the chefs told me I would get sent home if I continued like that.

I behaved myself for the rest of the day and was glad to away from that company... but at the same time I regret it now.
Most of the fellow waiting staff/barpeople were really nice and we were sometimes allowed to eat leftover foie gras/other stuff if too many of a particular dish had been made.

Oh, and eating little sneaky tidbits on the job was great fun!

No but I want to be fired from my current job so I can have excuse to relax for a few weeks. I hate my current job and I can't just quit because it would look horribly irresponsible with the lack of jobs out there, ugh.

  • I did once, when I was only eighteen years old. I lasted 3 weeks and then they let me go because I was "too shy" (that's what they told me). I went home and cried about it for a while, then resolved to change that about myself.

It was my fault, I was naive. I thought that because the company had environmentally conscious products and actively supported fair trade practices that it was far more altruistic than it really was. When it came down to it, they were there to sell-sell-sell, just like any other business. I was a lousy salesperson; I'd approach people, that part wasn't a problem, but I felt too awkward about aggressively convincing them to buy as much stuff as they possibly could - which was what my employer expected of me.

I was made redundant, but I have a feeling that was actually me being politely fired because I was always taking days off. I didn't mind because the job was shit.

Technically, yes. But it was political and by being officially fired I qualified for unemployment in the rare case where that actually works.

i worked in retail for over 3 years, and i hated it. customers are so stupid and nasty, and one day a customer pushed me over the edge, and i got fired for swearing at/insulting him.
that was a rough time period for me, drugs and drinking had a lot to do with it. wish i would've just quit, being fired doesn't look good on work record.

I had so many sick days at one company (it was a call centre and I hated it). My boss at the time was covering for me, I didn't figure this out until later. It wasn't until I was moved to a different team that I was pulled up.

Once sort of. I refused to work some particular hours, the manager rang me up and I basically asked if the man was a fucking idiot for not understanding that I wasn't going to work those hours and then I got told I couldn't work again unless I went in and spoke to (apologise and accept the hours) the manager which was never going to happen.
