Have you ever actually convinced someone of something important?

Basically, have you ever actually convinced anyone of anything of any actual importance (politics, religion, beliefs, etc.)? It seems like there is always argument about these topics, but there is never actually a conclusion unless the person comes to it themselves.

Have you ever convinced anyone to change their mind on an important topic?

I convinced somebody of the damage she's doing by driving a car and she did give it up. I'm very proud of that. If everyone got one other person out of a car, we wouldn't have them any more.

Yes. I think. It's hard to know exactly how set in their original opinion they were before I started talking. I've been told several times that I should work in law or politics but I don't care much for manipulative behavior.

    • I was just asking in general. In my experience, even if the person wasn't strong in their belief beforehand, simply debating the topic seemed to force them further away, broadening the gap.

I think you'd do great in either law or politics. You seem to be a good person (as far as I can tell online) with some brains in your head. Better than the majority in both fields.

Thank you. I have done some political work but it can be soul crushing at times so I reserve my energy for issues I'm really passionate about. My current work has elements of both so I know the game. And I don't like the game very much.

My older sister and I once convinced our little brother that when he turned 15 he would turn into a girl after the first full moon came. He was upset, (Only 10 or so at the time) and didn't think it was fair. This affliction only happened to the males in our family. Like being a werewolf but way worse.

Do what I do. Ignore them and avoid them.

Well, I don't know whether I succeeded or not, actually. I often recommend Buckleyism, although people don't seem that offended since hardly anyone's ever heard of it before. There have been two occasions when someone seemed interested, but presently I don't know whether I'm still the only Buckleyist in the world or not. :P

This year, out of the blue, my father found it fit to solemnly communicate his definite decision to not read Macbeth in this lifetime, to remove it from his list. I convinced him to do otherwise. That's all I can think of. It was of great importance on a personal level. ;)

As for your question about something of actual importance, I really don't know if I've ever done so directly, I'd like to think I've influenced a few people in my life positively with my views and passions, at least indirectly, yes.

No, and I have given up. I try to help but now I just let people go and watch them fail.

  • Not the person no, but I like to think that my team won the debates we did because of me.

We only ever lost when I couldn't be there.
