Have you been hypnotized before?

Professionally, off the Internet, or by yourself. The only form I'm not counting is the natural trance we drift in and out of each day, whether focused on a task, daydreaming, etc.

It works if you are open to it and consent to it. If you are sceptical or put up barriers it doesn't. Why would you not believe in it? There is plenty of evidence. It is like not believing in photosynthesis.

Most people here seem not to know what hypnosis even is, which is amusing. Hypnosis is nothing to do with mind-reading or psychics. It is about putting the mind in a restful state, akin to sleep, where the mind is fully open to the suggestions of the hypnotist. MIND-READING IS IMPOSSIBLE. HYPNOSIS IS NOT.

Mind-reading might not be completely impossible. Maybe one day in the future we will have figured it out - if we can convert radio waves to sound waves, why not one day try brain waves to sound waves?

I guess the psychic thing fits in how it's also on the phenomena-partially-believed-by-the-public subject.

Maybe in the future, yes it could be possible, but not in the "hearing voices in my head" or "look into my eyes" way that it is percieved by popular culture, or using currently available technology either. I also doubt if it would be legal to use mind-reading technology when, or if, it is ever developed.

And yes, public perception is a bitch sometimes.

Not hardly. There's no proof that hypnosis is real. Relax, yes, and that's no mystical secret (meditation), but hypnosis?? No, there's no real evidence. All the "evidence" is, is personal accounts of people who either profit from it or believe in it. That's hardly "evidence".

Photosynthesis=hypnosis? I don't have to believe in, or know a damn thing about, photosynthesis for it to be real. So, if something's only real if you believe in it, and no one can prove it, or see it, then it isn't really real, is it? More like hypnosis=unicorns.

I think we must have differing definitions of what hypnosis is. It exists whether you believe in it or not, but it only works on people who relax their minds and co-operate with the hypnotist. Unicorns don't exist in the real world, but hypnosis does. Unless all of the millions of people who have claimed to be hypnotised are liars, and the all of the hypnotists in the world are frauds, then hypnosis works.

There are many things in science that are proven to only work you believe in them. The placebo effect, for example. It exists whether you like it or not. It is science. But it only works on *you* if you believe does.

OK, so you're suggesting that it's acceptable to take the word of hypnotists (who profit from hypnosis) and believers (desperate and gullible people) in hypnotism as "evidence" hypnosis is real and effective?

So, there's a couple billion Christians on Earth, and the Bible says God is real, and of those billions I'm sure most would say God has given them extraordinary gifts and miracles of all sorts, so then it must be true right? That should prove the Bible is true and God exists, according to those standards of proof.

You are just repeating yourself. I agree that no amount of testimony is scientific evidence for anything. However, testimony is NOT the only arguement to support that hypnosis exists.

I'll make my point clearer for you. There are in science things, like the placebo effect, which are phenomena with scientific evidence to support them, but only work on people who believe they work. There is evidence that this phenomena is real besides tesimony.

Do you doubt that the placebo effect, which is comparable to hypnosis in that it only works on believers, exists?

I can relax just fine. I don't need some bullshit magic trick, and to look like a moron, to achieve relaxation. If hypnosis were real, you wouldn't have to believe in it for it to work.

I don't know, some things get pretty sensitive. Hypnosis is likely the way it is because of reactions in the person when he or she is biased. Disbelief would cause you to hinder it, while believing would cause you to encourage it. It's very connected with the placebo effect, but why would that make it any less believable than, say, FDA medication tests?

I have used lots of self hypnosis videos and pm3 files. I think I am quite a poor subject but I have felt it working a few times. I would like to be hypnotised by a real hypnotist at some point but I know of no stage shows in my area and I dont need hypnotherapy.

I was. The entire time I felt as though I was doing it because I didn't want to be kicked off the stage for not really being under. (afterwards I figured that this guy has done this for years so he'd know who was really under) Anyway, I bawled my eyes out on the way home thinking I faked the whole thing but I talked to a few people and I was. It wasn't at all how I thought it would be but I did everything he said and my brain always came up with a wonderful answer etc... The one thing that really sold me was the fact that ended up with 36 mosquito bites (it was outside obviously) and I didn't feel a single one.
It could be because I'm quite a people person and I like to be on stage, but there were some shy people doing some wild things. You have to have it done at least once in your life.

Interesting! Hmm... I wonder if the hypnotist used a suggestion to cause you to be unaware of your actions upon waking. You might have simply been too deeply under to notice, though. I would love to try having a session with a professional hypnotist; if only it were possible.

That's one of the reasons I thought I had faked it. At the end when he woke us up, he asked one man if he remembered me standing on him. He said no. He asked a few girls if they remembered these two men dancing to a certain song or if they knew how another ended up with bandaids all over his face. They all said no. I was thinking "oh no" because I remembered it all clearly but I felt very rested. I'm still uncertain, but I loved doing it! I hope you get the chance some day.

  • Yep. Multiple times actually, it's helped me with my unreasonable fear of needles. The person performing the hypnosis can't force you to do anything that's against your will, so it's no biggie. I personally loved the feeling of being hypnotized...so relaxing and soothing.

I was hypnotised by one of Ireland's best hypnotist "Adrian Kinght". but it won't work if you're not open to it. It's an amazing relaxing experience and I didn't believe it until I done it.

If it's benefits you want to know about, I can name some short-term ones right off the bat - relaxation, refreshment, and enjoyment. Therapeutically, you have the potential to change any unwanted part of you, given that you are open enough for it. But when it comes to just having a good time, there are limitless fun things to do with hypnosis, like changing into an animal, forgetting your name, or believing you have an entirely different personality!

once ive been hypnotized! this one guy came to our school to do a presentation on hypnosis and he chose me and a few other people from the audience to demonstrate. he made one person go to sleep, one pretend to be something totally different than she was, and made me forget my memory. i dont remember doing it either. but my friends said i called one of my teachers "grammy"... she gave me detention...

I've made some scripts for myself and recorded my own voice to listen to later. I enjoyed it. It feels good to hear your own voice relaxing you and feeding your mind affirmations and agreeable suggestions.

If I listen to a script made by someone I don't know, I skip the induction phase and listen to the suggestions to see if I agree with them first (before I listen to the whole thing). The thing with hypnosis is if anything is brought up that you disagree with, it will confuse you and bring you out of your trance/meditation. Much like reading a poorly written story; you just can't get into it because you think it's total bullshit. So, if I don't like how/what they are saying, then I won't bother listening to it because it just won't work. You want to be conscious when you make those decisions.

Not everyone is comfortable relinquishing any amount of perceived control they have over their mind. In fact, most are not. That's why only a few people in a crowd of hundreds actually participate in those hypnotists' shows.

    • mtg710

Good idea to do a check on scripts first, especially if you're particularly sensitive to hypnosis. Personally, I have to do checks because there's a fair chance I'll work to accept the suggestion I don't agree with (rather than coming out of trance).

After reading your comment, I think I might go in and try writing a self-hypnosis script. It makes sense - you trust yourself, you know what works best for you, and you can control what you want to suggest or reinforce.

I'm sure you'll have a lot of fun with it.

Some people find that deeper voices are more pleasant than regular or higher pitches. I cannot go into trance listening to another women's voice (I'm female), but hearing my own is almost the same as hearing my own thoughts. It works for me.

        • mtg710

That also makes sense, since lower-frequency sound would use less energy than the same volume at a higher pitch. Some people also whisper scripts rather than speak them, which has an immediate effect on me. Then again, I've easily gone under even when the person's voice sounds as if he or she is sick.

In terms of recreation, memory works well for me - I've forgotten my name several times, and even once was given a new name to answer to for that day (if I could only remember where I found the script). The most interesting would have to be a session in which a trigger word is introduced; it can be used by anyone I share it with.

The trigger is supposed to lock my body and mind in place. Another person can then come and reposition me, then say another word to release me. Because my conscious mind was locked in place, I would be unaware that any time has passed at all. I haven't shared it with anyone yet, but I have tested it with the hypnotist, and I'm pretty sure it worked. He just kind of moved on right after saying the word.

Do you also do some hypnosis for fun, or is it all therapeutic?

Just for fun. I do it because it feels good and I like that I can manipulate my mind like that.

You are highly affected by it! Wow. I've never had someone hypnotize me in person. It's always been through listening to tracks or making my own.

            What about you?

I basically grab what I can from Youtube, so there's a lot of junk to sift through. I've never been hypnotized in person, either. I was alone and listening to a trigger test pre-made by the hypnotist, so I stayed the same.

If you want to know about some therapeutic purposes, I did use hypnosis to relieve my fear of needles. I needed to have blood work done, and I wouldn't otherwise be able to because I would go into full panic. I'd found a 45-minute script that would help get rid of a fear chosen by the subject.

It was amazing - even though I threw up and temporarily lost my hearing and vision afterwards, I was never scared or nervous at any time. The sudden sickness after, I think, was because of all the water I drank on an empty stomach. A few people in my family can't do that either, or they will feel sick.

Is yours mainly from Youtube as well? What resources do you pull from?

    • mtg710

It's virtually impossible to permanently delete a person's memories through hypnosis. Only 15% of adults are highly sensitive to it (look up the article "This is Your Brain Under Hypnosis" from New York Times), and even then I doubt a permanent change can occur. It works by changing our perception or mindset of things, really.
