Have ever really experienced deep depression?

When I was younger I went through some very tough years. I battled severe depression that I can thankfully say I have not experienced in the last couple of years. I almost feel like people who have not really felt depressed don't really understand how severe it can be. What do you guys think?

Yes- I am currently depressed 38
Yes- I have experienced depression in the past 31
No- I have gone through hard times but I wouldn't say I was depressed 6
No- I am a very happy person overall 0

Yes, for a while, I did. Mainly during my teen years.

For some people, it lasts so long that it sort of becomes a part of their personality. That's when depression becomes scary.

Ya I've been on meds too but they made me worse so I'm off them. I still have days where I feel numb and really don't feel much of anything but I guess I'm slowly getting better as I think my body is healing itself emotionally/mentally..at least I hope so.

You are absolutely right, "it's soooooo easy to minimize depression or any mental illness for that matter when if you haven't had to deal with it yourself" my depression started when I was 19, and I have had it for nine years. It's unfortunate, but I am still fighting for the day that I will be line person I once was before I got sick

I have been severely depressed and suicidal in the past (about 2 years ago).
It was a combination of family history with mental problems and being on the wrong drug...as bad as it seemed I am so much better now and even though I may have to take meds for the rest of my life, its worth it.
People with depression often blame themselves and really believe people would be better off without them.
Things do get better so don't give up.

Well, what some people don't seem to know there is a difference between "depressed" and having depression... for example I would guess I have depression, because I really have no interests in life, and often times feels like it is no more vivid than a dream, going through the motions as they call it. it's a mental imbalance and not necessarily a direct result of outer problems. I am very grateful for the good things in my life, i am not really depressed, in the way that people think it means you're sad "woe is me" kind of thing. I'm not sad, I'm just not happy either. low mood, as they call it. In fact I feel pretty guilty to even say i have depression or am depressed because i know there are people who have it a lot worse. it's up to whatever those people show/tell me, I will understand that's how they feel whatever they tell me, even if I could never feel the same.

People don't understand depression unless they experience it. Same for childbirth, kidney failure, or living your own life. I don't know what it is to be you, you don't know what it is to be me.

    Amen.

  • yes, but I think I experience it differently than most people. I still don't understand most depressed people and my depressive symptoms were much different than typical ones.
