Has the dmv ever screwed you over?

Bear with me, this story is a little long...

So, quite a while back, I went through the process to get the title to my truck switched over into my name (this was before I moved and so it was at a different DMV place than the one I am using now). It was previously in my mother and father's name jointly. I remember this very specifically: I did the process, got the paperwork signed by both parties, and got the new title in the mail shortly thereafter.

Recently, I have been trying to switch insurance companies in order to get cheaper rates. I searched and searched for my title, but I couldn't find it. It wasn't in my safe, which is the only likely place I would keep it. This is just very uncharacteristic of me. I am typically very good at keeping up with/taking care of my things, it is just the type of person I am.

Being completely dumbfounded about how the hell I would lose something like that, I went to my local DMV to file for a lost title. I asked the bitch behind the counter to file for a lost title and gave her the VIN. She ended up telling me that the title had never been put in my name, and that it was still in my mom and dad's name. What the FUCK!?! I didn't argue with her, because she was not a very courteous person, and obviously hated her job very much: I would have gotten nowhere and lots of frustration.

After this, I remembered that a while back I had had to get my tags renewed. So I had went to my local DMV place (which, again, is different than the place I used to get the title switched over; it was the same place that I am using now) to get that done. When I got my new tags I went through the process for antique tags because my truck is an '86 model. If I remember correctly, they required me to give them the title as well as some other paperwork (tax assessments and such). I believe that they may have screwed something up and never sent me my title back or lost it or something.

I don't really know WHAT happened, but what perplexes me so much is 1)How would I lose something like that? I just do not think that is very likely at all. 2)How the hell did my name not get put in the system as the owner of the truck? I specifically remember getting this done! 3)Could it have been possible that the computers just didn't sync up or something, or maybe certain information was neglected to be put in the system?

What do you think may have possibly happened here?

Also, feel free to share your DMV horror stories please :)

YES!! They mistakenly put the wrong name as owner of my car (they screwed up buyer/seller somehow-it's their fucking job, how do you screw THAT up?), it was totally their mistake, yet they charged me something like $60 for a new registration because THEY screwed it up. I was speechless and pissed, but I had to pay because if I didn't my car was technically illegal! They are assholes, and if they make a mistake they won't fucking admit it.

There has been other times when I've had business to do and I'd talk to one lady and she'd say that I needed more documentation, so I'd go home to get it and come back and talk to a different lady who said 'oh, you don't need that!!'....wtf??

We don't have a "DMV" I'm guessing it's similar to our MOT centres

I sold a car privately to a seller. So we both went to the MOT where I officially notified the MOT that I would be officially surrendering the title of the vehicle via a form signed by me and the buyer. I submitted it and thought all was well.

A few months later, I received a letter stating that I was caught speeding in the vehicle AFTER I sold the vehicle. Thinking it was just a mistake, I called the MOT and was told that the ownership was still in my name. I told them that the ownership was changed over and submitted a form but they said they didn't receive it. I tried calling the buyer but his contact details changed.

A week passed and I got another speeding ticket, I was so fucking pissed at the MOT. I reported the car stolen as it was the only way I could notify the owner. Thankfully the police understood my reasoning.

Thankfully, I'm yet to have a bad experience and hopefully I'll never will, because I have no desire to learn to drive. I'm sorry you had to deal with that kind of shit. Hopefully, things will work themselves out.

Nope, I actually have great luck with the DMV.
When I went in for my drivers' license evaluation test (the driving portion) I was 18 and had less than 2 hours of experience driving in the past 2 years. I kissed as to the instructor and got my license anyway, despite failing half the test.

Not to mention that but my wait time is usually short and the owner's of the cars that I have bought are usually very good about sending the signed-over title in the mail. Nice ;)
