Has a very unlikely person ever greatly inspired you?

A person that you maybe never payed attention to, or opposed, or previously dismissed....Something you never saw coming. They say or do something that is wonderful and ignites a positive fire under you, that you never expected.

NOT (!!) a person that inspired you by their negative words/actions, EVERYONE has had that happen.

I love finding inspiration in unlikely things. In fact, I found it on a coffee mug the other day. It said:
    "Seek elegance rather than luxury,
    and refinement rather than fashion"
For the purposes of this poll I just googled the quote. Turns out this is a fragment of a quote by a Unitarian preacher (William Ellery Channing). Although these are not the words of an anonymous Hallmark writer, the musings of an 18th century theologian are an unlikely source of inspiration for a modern-day atheist as well.

I'm exactly with you. If you wait around for inspiration from people that you expect to get it from, you are closing yourself off to way too many learning opportunities. Also you are limiting yourself to a very specific kind of inspiration, and there are so many kinds. I find absolutely every single person in this world to be inspiring. Everyone has something to teach you. Every experience that you have is inspiring, you just have to learn to apply the right perspective.

I don't model myself on anybody else, because nobody has achieved all the things that I'd like to achieve in my life. Nobody has ever lead a perfect life. I respect different people for different reasons, but there is nobody I look up to who I could genuinely say has inspired me, let alone someone unlikely.

    • You don't necessarily have to think of them as a role model or want to live like or be like the person. Maybe you just see a person you thought had no soul doing something nice....basically you see another side to a person you never thought you'd see and it inspires you to do something, create something or change something. Something along those lines.

  • Long Post---warning

My journalism teacher. In the 11th grade I was caught smoking so I was put in everything to keep me busy and out of trouble. If I wasn't at school, I was at work or at home sleeping. I literally had no time to myself.

One of the things I did at school was run the opinion column on our newspaper so I got to know our teacher Mrs. Hale well. She was someone I had seen around the school and thought was ok but as we got to know each other she inspired me.

There was just something different about her. She was someone who led a perfectly good life yet existed only to be a light in the lives of others. It inspired me to be the same; to be a light-bearer for others.

I have no heroes; those like Vladimir Putin, Gianni Alemanno, and Christian Bale have my respect but an obscure english teacher is the only one who ever lived up to my expectations.

For me, it's Hunter S. Thompson.

I'm female, and not into drugs or literature. I was introduced to Thompson's work through my interest in Johnny Depp, since Depp was a good friend of Thompson's and starred in two movies based on Thompson's work.

I recently started reading a lot of articles on HST, reading letters he wrote that have been posted on the Internet, and watching interviews he gave that have been posted on Youtube.

Thompson inspires me because he was fearless, bold and brash. He didn't care what anybody thought of him; his aim was never to be a people-pleaser. He lived life on his own terms, and he didn't let anybody step on him.

I only wish that I could be even half of the awesome person that HST was.

  • I'll give my experience, and perhaps show a good example of what I'm asking.

    For me, Mike Tyson.

I'm a female, never watched boxing, nor do I have ANY interest in it. Always thought Mike Tyson had nothing to offer, was an idiot and goofy. Then I watched a video of him in interviews over the decades and found him to be so inspiring. Regardless of what he has done, or does for a living, the way he spoke about hard work, dedication, strength, sacrifice and attaining goals just spoke to me more than anyone ever has. The fact that I was so surprised as to who was inspiring me made it all the more inspiring!

This person i know who is professionally classed as a retard (by the IQ, don't remember what it was)surprised me one day by telling me about some quite deep stuff about love.
It was personal to him so i'm not going to reveal it to all of you.

  • My old neighbor was and still is my role model. I never really had anyone to look up to. My own father wasn't someone to look up to. But my neighbor treated me like i was his son. Him and his wife let me into their house and even let me stay for dinner on some nights. They showed me what a true family was like and inspired me to work hard in school because he showed me what my life could be like if I work hard in life.

Yes, that very unlikely person would have to be my previous "Access Database" instructor. He looked at me and stated to me infront of two of my other computer professors, "THAT I WAS TO STUPID TO LEARN THIS PROGRAMME AND THAT I SHOULD NOT BE IN IT!"

So to prove the shit brain wrong, I took the class Independent Studies and did it at home where I could spend day and night at my leisure and droan into my brain how to do it.

I not only finished the 15 week class in 9 weeks, with an A GRADE, I also helped other students in another Access class learn it because their professor did not know anything about it.

Plus this also lead me to be able to learn Computer Programming and dabble with Web Design. That was like 3 or 4 years ago, and he is sitting on his fat ass and is probably stating to himself duh, she is not as stupid as I thought she was. In closing, everyone that I knew at the time who had this professor from HELL also hated his guts.

In final closing, would like to thank Craig Wilson Colson; {Professor from Hell} stating I was stupid, because maybe without this encouragement I might of never taken a stab in computer languages thinking they might be too hard, slow at learning them, but when I take tests on them I get betwixt 4.0 to 3.5.

    • This is exactly the type of example I DIDN'T want (see my description)! This sort of thing has happened to everyone. I don't need a poll to know this.

So what, stick it up your whats-it. My response is what I felt was my answer to your ignorant pole. So love it or leave it dude. If this post was not what you wanted, then what it the "HECK'S HALF ACRE" did you mean by it? So lump it.

        • Again, if you had bothered to read my description, I did say I didn't want this type of answer. WHo HASN'T this happened to? I explained exactly what I wanted in the description. Everyone else seemed to 'get it'.

That said, I'll be over here sticking my pole up my ass.
