Hand pound

When things go wrong, my brother Rick (he's 27) completely loses control. If he drops something, he calls himself "drops the clown" and smacks himself with a hammer on his hand. Other times if something gets him mad, he'll hit his head and face until he's covered in bruises and screams "a hee hee hee" as he does it. I know this probably comes across as a bs question but sadly I'm making none of this up.
Other times he'll just yell "shall be" or "the angels are here" over and over. He isn't retarded, he was valedictorian of his high school class but never had any friends and can't hold a job.
Are any of these things that he does normal?

I have serious anger issues, I've never hit anyone who didn't deserve it. But when I was younger 16-19/20, I would hit myself or walls, just because I didn't want to hurt anybody else. It sounds to me like your brother is unable to express his anger and frustrations in any other way. He should seek help, such as anger management, or perhaps some more intensive psychological treatment if needed. Don't go thinking they'll lock him up or anything for seeking help though. It's the people who don't recognise that there's a problem, who end up going completey crazy.

He's having mental health issues, please ask your parents or someone to get him help.

    Yeah I agree with ^

Get him help before he hurts himself seriously, or hurts others.

This is my first time on this site in years, but I was the original poster (this is a new account). Unfortunately, things have actually become a lot worse since then. My brother has developed a serious alcohol problem as well as some other substance issues, a result of a psychiatrist using him as his personal guinea pig.

He now lives with me and If'm the primary caretaker instead of my parents. I've been trying unsuccessfully to get him into better counseling services as well as rehab, but legally I can't force him to do anything until he's declared mentally incompetent, which he says he'll kill himself if I try to do it. My hands are pretty tied, as is my life. When I'm not at work I'm usually managing him, so dating and much of a social life are impossible. I'm 34 and not getting any younger, so it's an issue. I feel selfish thinking that way, but it is what it is I suppose.

  • It's not normal, but it is understandable. That's the thing about this site "normal" means that it's normal for a common person to do it. Your brother is suicidal. His acts are regular for a suicidal person, but they are not normal. Ergo the answer is no, he's not normal.
