Hallucinations from depression?

so long story short I had to leave my loving boyfriend and wonderful family to visit a very small town for a short while. During that while I suffered bad depression because I missed them so dearly and because of the chances that I wouldn't be able to see them again. during this time I had of couples strange hallucinations and nightmares.
I had hallucinated that I had been coughing up small spiders and that while I was driving the car with melting.
in my nightmares I saw myself melting and I ended up pulling out my skin trying to make it stop, I had the same dream multiple times.
Can depression cause this?

One of my doctors has mentioned that depression can cause hallucinations, if that's any help.

That can happen when depression is really severe. However, you only describe a few hallucinations so I wouldn't make that much out of it. I agree with the poster saying it could have been from sleep deprivation.

  • You probablly have psychotic depression. If youre also having manic episodes it could be bipolar and if the hallucinations continue when your mood is neutral it could be schizoaffective disorder. Ive also heard of severe ptsd causing hallucinations but you would need something horrible to happen to trigger that disorder.

I wouldn't push the panic button on this, honestly. It was only a few hallucinatory experiences, not someone who regularly hallucinates. She was probably just under a lot of stress, possibly sleep deprived and this resulted in a few hallucinatory experiences. With full on psychosis, there is much more involved than simply hallucinating a few times.

Yes depression can cause psychosis. I had that once as well as breaks with reality. Not fun stuff.
