Greatest "classic" metal band?

I've always been a huge Iron Maiden fan and I think they get the shit end of the stick too often... they deserve more recognition. And while i'm well aware everyone is buying their t-shirts, and they have a fair amount of popularity, bands like Metallica and Black Sabbath get more attention than they deserve while Iron Maiden is just sort of pushed aside, living in the shadows. What do you guys think?

Iron Maiden 6
Metallica 9
Megadeth 1
Black Sabbath 6
Anthrax 0
Slayer 4
Pantera 4

Really bands like Steppenwolf and Deep Purple invented Metal, but the sound wasn't entirely refined and unique until the bands on this list came around. Each influenced a slightly different sound (i.e. Pantera influenced Groove, Sabbath influenced Doom, Iron Maiden influenced Power Metal, and the others on this list influenced Thrash) but it all comes down to stone cold Metal which is what all us Metal lovers love

Nope. Those bands pushed hard rock.

The first metal riff was black sabbath in the song "black sabbath"

And Black sabbath is easily the best classic metal band, the first 5 albums are amazing and just can't be fucked with.

And sabbath was directly influenced by 40s/50s blues.

Metal comes from straight up blues.

And make that the first 6 albums cause Sabotage is badass!

I can't say who's better. It's definitely between Iron Maiden, Metallica, and Pantera for me. I knew Metallica and Pantera before I really discovered Iron Maiden fully though.

All those bands are phenomenally successful and well-recognised. I don't think any of them are underrated. Iron Maiden aren't part of the Big 4 because they're not thrash, but I don't think anyone doubts their importance to metal.

Sabbath don't do it for me, because I've never enjoyed doom as much as thrash. Metallica can do it for me, and I do like the versatility they have compared to a lot of metal bands. I really like the energy in Slayer, and the energy and attitude of Pantera. Iron Maiden have an anthemic energy, which I appreciate but don't love.

  • My favorite from your list is Pantera. My favorite all time metal band though is Emperor.

I just can't stomach Bruce's voice personally, metallica has the odd good song but I like the st anger album which is actually the least metallica sounding, I used to listen to opeth bit they were later than the choices they were 90's.

Out of the list I'd choose metallica, I should really try out more metal the only thing I listen to is Jamie lenman who has a double album first half metal but the second half is folk/jazz/acoustic and deafheaven which is more post rock shoegaze but with black metal vocals and drums.

What would you recommend as a good starting point op?

I'd say try all the classics on the list if you haven't already then maybe move up to Five Finger Death Punch, Avenged Sevenfold, and the like

I've known a few people to not understand the hype and obsession associated with Iron Maiden. maybe it's just that they've been around for so long and have been so successful that people have taken them for granted

they will forever be one of my first and most favorite band though

Before I saw your list Iron Maiden would be the one I would choose. Hallowed be thy name live is one of the greatest songs ever.
