Graduate school: i'm stuck, don't know what to do

Hi everybody,
I come to graduate school full of expectations of learning and having great models to look at. I realized, very soon that it is all a disgusting political crap. You need to be somebody's protegee to obtain certain privileges. If you just want to work and research, oh well, it is not enough...you must kiss a number of asses, before you can reach your goals.. I hate this. I just want to study and get out from here. I'm almost done but, at the same time, I would want to quit and tell everybody to go to hell. I'm getting really depressed. I cannot get my work done and I cry all the time. Any advice?

    I hate to say it but you are just now getting a taste of what the REAL world is like. Rarely these days do you get a job based on your merits...it truly is who you know and who's ass you will kiss. Try and do the best you can because you also need that degree and masters to get anywhere in life. Good luck!

    I agree you should talk to a therapist just to let it out. We all need to bitch. ... This is why I hate academia. I think your decision on quitting should weigh in how many years and dollars you've invested and how much will it increase your salary when you graduate. Spend time with friends, do well, but don't stress yourself to be the best. No one cares if you graduate top in your class, just try to learn everything you can.

    Talk to a school councilor about the trival politics. where there is power, there is abuse,,,,IF you allow it. I am 59, and REFUSE to kiss ass,,could not care less if it is a cop,or a judge,, I have my standards,,,and, I take down anyone who tries to step on me. ( I am currently getting a judge fired, and disbarred, for his silly little games with me.)

    You quite possibly go to my school.

    I just have to ask this: is it possible for you to kiss ass? I mean, I can feel sorry for you if there is nobody who would accept your ass kissing, but if you're just one of those people of "uncompromising ideals" I can't really pity you all that much - because I've spent my entire college education surviving on ass-kissing and the like and the only problem I've encountered is people who won't LET me kiss their ass.

    And by the way, don't drop out of school. The real world involves 10 times more ass kissing.

    I just finished my masters, it got tough towards the end, serriously just grin and bare it and get through the other side, and get the fuck out. some times you just need to cope it on the chin...

    I am entering graduate school next year myself (British) but if you have reached this far you might as well finish. Then when you are through you can tell all those mofos what they can do to themselves.

    It's unfortunate our education system is so flawed. I totally understand you. That's one of the main reasons i dropped out of college.
