Girls: is it normal to have a fear of tampons?

So I got my period about four years ago and I've always worn pads. Recently, I wanted to try wearing tampons... I got a tampon and got ready to insert it but I immediately became nauseous and anxious at the thought of putting it in. It wasn't so much I was scared of it hurting but of the fact that I was putting a "foreign object" in my body. I'm also a virgin and since the whole tampon incident I am worried of what my behavior will be when I have sex for the first time... Is this normal?

Totally normal .. ! I know so many girls/women that say this about tampons or when it's come to trying to use one so .. your definately not alone on that one. As for "foreign objects" though .. hate to see how your gonna go with a penis .. lol.

I think you should try it once to see how you feel about it. Just keep yourself calm as possible and use 'lite' flow. (Smaller tampon.) Allow yourself to go through the anxiety until it passes. Unless you start feeling light headedness, dizziness, or shortness of breathe (in that case take it out, calm yourself, and disregard the idea until you feel brave again), you should wear it for about an hour or so and then change back to a pad. You can decide from from there how you felt.
As for the safety precautions of a tampon, a lot of mistakes are made through human error. If you can't understand the directions, you shouldn't hesitate to call the number on the box. (Men, the following sentence is graphic) The two biggest safety precautions are tugging on the string until the tampon is nearest the opening (without being exposed), and wearing a tampon for no longer than said on box.

Very normal, I am in my 20s and have never got round to inserting a tampon! Too many stories about toxic shock syndrome, they seem quite unhygienic and nauseating. The idea of inserting them and the fact that they absorb/ swell up inside me, I do not like. Just use whatever you feel comfortable using.

I have a friend who passes out when she tries to wear them. She has tried a few times and it just doesn't work for her. However she has no problem with sez or the use of toys. Something about tampons just freaks her out. I don't think it's normal, but you aren't the only one.

Sez. This is obviously another, more intense, form of sex that I just haven't heard of yet, right? Sez. sezsezsezeszesezesezeszesezesezeszesezesezesezesezesezesezesezesezes!

What is wrong with me? Lol.

You really just need to be more comfortable with it. I don't know how old you are but I have always found tampons more clean and more discreet than pads. My mum showed me when i started how to insert and let me make my own mind up about them. Maybe you just need to get used to them?

  • Yes.

Relax. You don't have to use them. There are four options I can think of off of the top of my head for this...

Paper (tissue) pads, cloth pads, tampons, and menstrual cups. The second and last one are Earth-friendly and good for your plants. Yes, that's right, you just put the blood on them. It's full of nitrogen!

It took me a while to warm up to the idea, but look into it, it makes a lot of sense.

It's Western ideology that makes the idea freaky!

I think it's common, but it's sad that they don't get to experience tampons...

I started my period 9 years ago, but I didn't start wearing tampons until last year. It's okay if you don't want to wear tampons. Some women are just more comfortable with pads.

Are you a feminist? You have to be if you're talking about tampons instead of MALE SUICIDE RATES. MALE SUICIDE RATES is more important than feminism. Try gender-neutral-language candy bars. These are candy bars made with the love of gender-neutral-language! But MALE SUICIDE RATES is more important than gender-neutral-language.

Maybe you should try Tampon Tea. It's a delicacy that's only available once a month.

  • It's probably normal... I hated tampons because they always hurt no matter how far I inserted them. So I got a menstrual cup. You're still putting a "foreign object" up there, but I find it much more comfortable (and painless) and there have been no reports of toxic shock syndrome. I really recommend reading about them.

It is normal to be weirded out by things down there, but you don't have to be. Educate yourself and get to know your body. You don't have to be afraid.

I am the exact same way. I don't know if it's really normal, but you're not the only one! I've used them a few times after getting over the initial idea of putting it in, and I just don't really like them.

But the way you described getting it out of the box and hesitating sounds exactly like me!

I heard of a female in our school who got hospitalized since she could not get it out. Not sure if that was a just a rumour though.

Its totally fine. i was completely TERRIFIED at first. the thought of a tampon was just... weird. actually the first time i had to go to the beach on my period, i kept feeling like i could feel it, and ending up wearing a PAD with my swimsuit and wore shorts overtop so you couldnt see. lol what a loser 11 year-old me was. and dont worry about sex. you should have a few more years b4 anything like that comes up. :)
