Gay as in homosexual

Is it normal I do not understand how the word gay went from meaning lighthearted and carefree to meaning a homosexual?
It was a great descriptive word full of happiness and light which has turned into a cause or a curse, depending on who uses it now.
How unfortunate.

    Gay means multiple things, and none of them are bad.

      If someone says you're gay as hell, I don't think they mean it in a nice way.

        If I said that, it'd probably just be in a literal sense. So not really a nice or mean way.

    Apparently it even meant prostitute and brothel at one point. I don't see how its a cause or a curse now, but what other word would you prefer? Why are you so bothered by the evolution of the word gay?

    There are lots of words whos meanings have changed over time.

    I think it started in late 19th century to mean men having sex with other men and grew from there.
