Gamers? anyone? best game.

This may not be the best site to ask this, but I will try anyway.

So my boyfriend was obsessed with the Grand Theft Auto game that I bought him for his birthday. He finally finished it and seems down about it. I feel bad and want to buy him a new game tomorrow, that is as similar as possible, or at least as fun. He has already finished the story mode in all of the old GTA games. When he gets home from work he really enjoys playing them, so I'm determined to find something he will enjoy, as much. I would like to buy the closest thing to that style of story mode.

I remember seeing commercials awhile ago (maybe a few months?) the game was new and he was excited about it, but I cannot remember the name and can't ask, otherwise it won't be a surprise.

Does anyone know any games that compare and are similar? I'll buy two, if there is more than one "new" release. I just would like the opinions of gamers, so I know I am buying the right game.

Thanks in advance.

    • Thank you! The game was Watch Dogs, I'm excited to see if he likes it. I'm going to get a second game, for good measure, do you know of another one that is fun? He really likes a good storyline.

I actually have gfs that get mad at their bf's, for playing their games "too much", I don't get it, they seem to love it and have fun, I think it's great and enjoy him being excited about how well he does, although he gets mad at the TV when he plays Call Of Duty, I bought it for him, I can't really complain.

  • You must really love your boyfriend...As for suggestions I have no clue. I know nothing about video games and never play them.

Has he played red dead redemption?

Oh and was the game called watch dogs?

To be honest after playing gta 5 pretty much any open world game he'd compare to it and it probably just won't be the same, it'd be best to get something story driven maybe? Get him enjoying a different style of game like bioshock infinite to take his mind off finishing gta 5.

And Damn I'm jealous, lucky guy!

Hope he gets you stuff too though haha

    • Thank you! It was Watch Dogs! Big help, thanks.

I know GTA is a tough one to replace, he really loved the multiple story lines and the ability to switch between three characters. I actually enjoyed watching him play it so much, it was cute how involved he would get and I saw it as a mini-movie, the Trevor character was hilarious. He played it so much, he seems down without it. I'm hoping Watch Dogs is just as fun. Some reviews show Sleeping Dogs? Is this similar, or the same as Watch Dogs?

He's pretty great with gift giving, it's receiving gifts that he feels guilty about, but I enjoy getting him things he likes and has fun with. When I bought him the Playstation (320gb) it had just come out, it was supposed to be the best, now the PS4 is out and everyone says it's worlds better. Now I have to consider it, are the graphics that much better?

I'll apologize in advance I'll have to get my inner geek out for this answer.

I know what you mean about getting involved, it's such an immersive game plus switching between the characters in free roam felt natural and like they were living their lives, it's easy to get sucked in.

I've not played watch dogs but I've heard its more about gameplay than story, if you want an open world with good story then check out mafia 2, thing is with that game it's a great story but that's it, the city is only for driving between missions but I liked it as a story driven game with an open world for immersion, and it's immersive at the beginning of the game the city is covered in snow and the radio stations are all playing Christmas songs and I swear when I looked out of the window I expected to see snow.

I never finished sleeping dogs, it was an interesting premise but the driving was really arcadey which put me off.

There's another rockstar game I loved called la noire, again there's not much to do in the open world but the story and pacing is incredible, plus when you really get to feel like a detective but it's more about solving murders than shooting which I personally liked.

The saints row games are like gta on mushrooms big stupid over the top fun, like just cause 2.

And unfortunately I'm not sure, I don't have the money for next gen consoles, ny brothers got an xbox one though and I've seen a lot of that.

It was always going to be the most subtle change between a generation last time it was sd to hd now it's upgraded graphics, they're better but not massively so but then you won't see a big difference until more engines are created just for next gen, if you're a gamer then yeah it's worth it, or maybe wait until more cones out on the systems.

        • I just bought Watch Dogs! Thanks for that, he'll be surprised when he gets home. I literally can't wait to give it to him and see if he enjoys it, as much.

I have seen Saints Row posted a lot, it must be good. Like you said, the immersion in the game and story is what he likes, realistic and "missions", but I guess all games are mission oriented? When I would watch him play Call of Duty: Black Ops, it was so much shooting! He liked playing with friends, but it didn't grasp his attention alone, this is why I hope Watch Dogs is as great as Grand theft auto, premise wise.

I know what you mean, about prices, when I bought his Playstation, it was 600+ bucks, rounding to $750, with the "Move" add on - plus, I choose some "special edition" version of Black Ops for him, to go with it. I haven't looked into the Ps4 prices, yet.

Deus Ex III: Human Revolution [Director's Cut]

It's a 2011 release but definitely worth playing. I myself got around to playing it a few months ago. if not now then get it for him later. It's probably really inexpensive too

    * star rating of each feature represents how that feature compares to other games. (5 stars = as good as any other out there. 4 stars = excellent)

    **** First-person shooter
***** Brilliant, deep and thoughtful storyline
    **** Open world
***** Very very detailed world and interactive too
***** Cause and effect (many choices you make affect future scenarios)
    ***** Atmospheric and cinematic-sounding soundtrack
    **** Many side-missions
**** Can stealth or blast your way through missions.
***** Experience gained allows you to upgrade your character
**** Good physics engine (can throw stuff around, vending machines, fire extinguishers. Some items have secret uses)
    **** Great graphics with a unique/signature look
    ***** Impressive voice acting
***** More than one way to solve a puzzle/task/mission
***** "The game makes you learn more about yourself as a person, than the character in the game." - from an article I once read

    • Seeing Red Redemption, a lot. I might have to consider this, appreciate your help.

I hope every guy has a gf that respects their bf's gaming hobby, it's such a great way to relax and release stress, for game lovers, he always wants to limit how much he plays, thinking I would feel ignored, but finally I instilled it in him -- just play away -- it's like little movies for me when I pay attention, I like to give him space though, so if he gets frustrated and involved, he can focus better. He appreciates that, but prefers I watch and learn the story and premises, he takes pride in doing well. It's endearing.

It is great that you all are so helpful and take notice of my desire to treat him well and I respect your opinions, I'm really glad to see gamers here, you all have made my decision easier and made me feel better about asking this, here.

Two games, hope he likes them.

I have been playing Dark Souls 2. It's not much like grand theft auto, but if he likes role playing games then definitely give it a try. Fair warning though, the dark souls series is widely regarded as brutally challenging. Because of this, however, it is also extremely rewarding in a way that few modern games are.

As far as games that are somewhat similar to GTA, I could recommend a few.

-The Assassins Creed games are tons of fun. I actually have assassins creed black flag and it is very addictive. I have beat assassins creed 1 and 2 and they were both incredible games. Great open worlds set in historical places that are beautifully and accurately recreated with excellent gameplay mechanics and an enticing storyline as well.

-The Batman games are really great fun too. I have (FINALLY, spaceghost...) started playing Arkam Asylum and it's just awesome! :)

-I haven't personally played watchdogs, but I've heard it's pretty great.

-The uncharted series is just fantastic as far as story, gameplay, and graphics go. It's not free roam (like gta) though. Another game by the same developer, which is also said to be incredible, is called the last of us. I really want to play that one. Maybe they'll release it for PC or something or my roommate will get it for his ps4. One can only dream...

Anyways, I've gone off track a bit. I admire your loving and understanding/tolerate relationship with your boyfriend and his gaming hobby. I wish you well with your choice, and I hope he likes whatever you decide on.

    • Thank you! That was an awesome and thorough descriptions of those games, this helps a ton. I really like how the Dark Souls game sound, if it is very challenging, I think he will enjoy that. I think he's incredibly smart, as well as tactful when he plays his games...so he'd love a challenge, this should keep him interested and having fun the whole time -- and like you said -- it will be much more rewarding for him to finish it. I like this idea, as the second game.

Assassins creed sounds like something my brother plays, so I'll look into it, as well.

It's nice to see feedback from people, like yourself, I was worried this was a silly question and that no one would respond. I definitely love making him happy and seeing him have a good time playing his Playstation; so many friends have said, "Say goodbye before you buy him X game"...even his PlayStation itself; as if it's selfish of him to indulge and play so often, like their bfs do. I would never listen to that, everyone is entitled to enjoy something that's a personal form of entertainment. I refuse to deny him his personal space and gaming experience, with friends and while home. It's his stress reliever, after a long workday. He deserves that and more, in my opinion. I guess I went off topic as well. I do appreciate all of this help, very nice of you.

        • Hey! Thanks, I actually did plan to update, I'm thankful for all of this help.

I am currently buying Dark Souls on Amazon. I just got back from the store, although Darks Souls wasn't in, luckily they had Watch Dogs, so I can't wait until he gets off work. Do you think the Creed game is better than Saints Row? I might it to my cart, too.

            You're welcome :)

To be honest, I don't know a whole lot about the Saints Row series. Personally, I think I would get bored of them pretty quickly. From what I gather, they are kind of styled like grand theft auto, but they are very 'over the top.' They would be good for a laugh I think, but mostly I get the impression that they are just ridiculous in general. It's a game you definitely can't take too seriously, but isn't that the point of many games anyway? He might like it, lol.

I definitely think the Creed games are probably better though. That's just my personal opinion and taste. The game types are very different though, so it's kind of difficult to compare anyway.

  • Yes that's GTA V, Trevor is such a strange character! Especially when they tell him to put the submersible back and he's like "nnnha!" like a little child! I thouroughly enjoyed watching my boyfriend finish that game and now that he's finished, I just mess around with the cars and stuff, I haven't actually completed the story line, I enjoy more fictional type games like Skyrim, which by the way is awesome and you will love it and I'm sure your boyfriend will too! There is literally, an endless supply of side quests aside from the main quest lines, but if you get the Dawn Guard expansion with Skyrim its even better, you chose between fighting vampires or becomming one. Darksouls is amazing but extremely challenging as someone on here mentioned, but yes, very rewarding in the sense of 'holy shit, I actually didn't die within 60 seconds of playing' haha! My boyfriend recently bought the Black Armor addition with allows you to start the game with a set of really cool and powerful weapons which trust me, helps A LOT. I'm glad we're not the only people into games and stuff, I get so angry and annoyed when people we know are going out drinking every weekend and look at us funny for wanting to stay in all weekend and play the shit out of some good xbox games.

    • Oh I feel you there! My bf and I go out, here and there.. But are so over the bar scene, nowadays. If not games, he really prefers a movie and dinner (that we actually have fun cooking, together) It's another reason why I love our relationship. The simple things that make a night enjoyable.

GTA IV was the funniest thing, Trevor was absolutely hilarious, the side story lines, as well. If you remember the hitchhiking girl, who could not stop talking! Or his love affair with the wife of wife of one of the characters.

  • My boyfriend too enjoys his gaming very much and so do I, we enjoy giving eachother helpful tips on how to defeat large enemies etc, I think its the coolest thing ever that you as his girlfriend can relate to his hobbie and support him and even buy him games! I'm sure he's really happy that you're so into his games because like you mentioned, some girls actually get angry at their boyfriends for playing games. WTF. Anyway, is it GTA V that he finished? That was an amazing game! You should try to get him games like dead space 1, 2 and 3 if he hasn't finished them already, and dark souls 1 and 2 are definetly on mine and my boyfriends favourite list! Dark souls 2 I must say is for the hardcore type gamers as this game is so difficult and intimidating that just by watching my boyfriend I am afraid to play it. I have a character created, but can't find the courage to actually start playing. I'm in the first stage of the game and whenever I try to play any further I die, get discouraged, and wait till my boyfriend gets home so I can once more marvel at his gaming expertise. My ultimate favourite is Skyrim, the last Elder Scrolls game, for now anyway. Its amazing and I've gotten quite far in that one. You are a bad ass warrior and you fight dragons! But there's so much more to the game than just that. You get to roam free around the country of skyrim and all of its cities and villages, pick ingredients along your way and actually make your own potions. Buy him Skyrim, you won't regret it and he won't regret playing it!

    • Yes! GTA IV, the one with Trevor, Michael and Franklin (was it, the third character?) I watched him play it every night, it was entertaining to watch, it was such an awesome storyline and how they all came together as friends/partners in crime, was really neat. I was always laughing at Trevor and his eccentric and sporadic personality.

I have Dark Souls ordered, because of the challenge people say, I know he'll enjoy that. Skyrim was mentioned here as well, it sounds like a good game.
He loves Watch Dogs, I'm going to have Dark Souls and possibly Skyrim set aside, for when he completes Watch Dogs.

And thanks, I have bought him a lot of games, 90% of the collection. I really like making him happy, with things that last. I would never get mad at him for enjoying himself, he works hard and it helps him unwind. When he's happy - I am.
I'm glad that I bought the Playstation itself for him because on top of gaming, there are so many uses. The Bluray player, music, PS Network has movies to rent and buy, Netflix, Hulu and other applications... there are a ton of add ons, so it was worth it all around. He games, I rent movies.

  • YES! He loves it! Very happy with all of your great recommendations.

He's been playing it all night, I am so excited, it's great to see him being able to enjoy himself with a great game, again. Plus, it looks really cool and has a really neat premise.

He's just now going to bed, 2:30am. I guess I did good.
Thanks guys, if any other cool games release
    **I'll add to his collection**

My PS3 hasn't been loading discs for a year now, so I'm not really onto the latest games...

But there's one game my friend recommends to everyone: Okami. It isn't new, but it's all I can think of right now.

I first introduced it to her by playing Okami Den. She looked it up and found out there was a first version. And... it's a T rated game, unlike Okami Den, whichi is E 10+ (Wow...).

It's a nice game. I haven't played it though. The graphics and the music are both amazing! It's so... Japanese (Does that sound racist? Sorry if it does.)! Plus, the main character, Amaterasu, is based on a goddess. But, like I said, I don't know how the gameplay is like. But all I know is that Okami Den is extremely sad. The main character, Chibiterasu, is so cute!! But... How could something as cute as Chibi go through that...?

I've heard that Okami is a beautiful game to play as far as story and graphics. That one also brings to mind the Ico and the shadow of the colossus games. It also makes me think of the game that has been continually delayed for a ridiculous amount of time now. It's called the Last Guardian.

      • I bought him the Playstation 3, with 320gbs, when it was first released, apparently it was the biggest? He prefers the Playstation, over any other forms of gaming.

So anything that has a good story/realistic plot, he enjoys. Anything like GTA, he also LOVED Metal Gear Solid. So games like that. GTA really had his attention, he played it every night, until he finished it.

I don't know if it still is (they could have fixed it by now), but skyrim was an awful and buggy mess on ps3 when it first came out. It is a pretty fun game though if you like role playing games. Very long story mode and tons of side quests to do also.
