Freak weight loss. can it be helped?

Hello readers... I'm new to this, so its a bit uncomfortable for me.

Well, i am a 20 year old female with the height of 5ft3. Over the past ...i dunno, 2- 3mnths, i've been rapidly losing weight, and not on purpose. I have just reached almost 88Lbs. Doctors are puzzled, whats more.. I'M puzzled. I've been eating healthy foods, and 3 filling meals a day plus snacking (cos who doesnt snack? :P), and yet my weight just keeps dwindling. i went from 102 pounds (the most i've ever weighed in my life, and i was happy that i had reached this weight.), to 97Lbs, then to 93 and finally 88. I was put on protien shakes, but i am still not satisfied. i need to know WHY and HOW, treatment is nice but all i really want are answers.
If you have any insight, please, post a comment. thanks for reading.

I am 40 years old and over the last 9 months I have lost 25 pounds. Not intentionally either. Tests after tests after tests and still no effing clue as to why I am loosing weight. I had Gastric By-Pass Surgery 9 years ago. I weighed 303 pounds. Up until 9 months ago I had maintained my "ideal" weight of 135 pounds. I am 5'1". The only weird thing is that my white blood cell count goes up and down with every blood test. My gastroenterogist has no idea why I am loosing weight, and I eat! I am now eating more carbs and junk food just so I can put a few pounds on. I would love to know what you find out from your doctor! I hope everything turns out for the best with you!
    Regards
    Carrie

  • You probably have a hyperthyroid

This has happened two of my friends and they had hyperthyroidism.

Their GP did a thyroid test and they came back normal. One went to an Endo and the other to a Gyno; got add'l tests which showed the problem. Now they are on meds and doing much better.

The thyroid is so important. It is almost like a 2nd brain. Ensure it gets checked. Good luck.

It could be anything from a tape worm to thyroid problems. Google illnesses and diseases that cause rapid weight loss and get yourself tested. Your doctor isnt doing enough.

^ don't take medical advice from strangers. I have heart failure and weigh 88 pounds and am 5'8". Just try a new doc and good luck!!

Oh. You'll want an endocrinologist for the tests I suggested.

You gain weight in heart failure. Not lose it. You need a complete metabolic and hormone panel. And your history is too incomplete/vague to make a good suggestion outside the one j just did.

I'm actually having the same problem. I am 24, 5ft3 and I weighed 116 in May, 112 in August, 99 in December and I'm at 96 now. I can eat whatever I want and I still lose weight. My docs cannot figure out what is wrong, and they've pretty much run out of opinions on what is wrong and now their office staff is convinced I'm anorexic and seeking attention. I was instructed to have protein shakes as well, but they didn't help that much. If they figure it out for you, let me know. :/

i hate to be weird or morbid, but get a cancer screening, diabetes tests, and have them check for infections of any kind.
hope things turn out ok for ya.
    take care.

You may have worms, I got pinworms, and I can eat whatever I want and I still lose pounds of fat.

You could have some underlying medical condition, but here's another possibility...

So called "healthy foods" are not healthy at all. They are loaded with carbohydrates, and this is messing up your metabolism. There is a raging controversy in the field of nutrition. More recent research is pointing to carbohydrates as the source weight-related problems.

I would suggest looking into *low-carbohydrate* nutrition. Normally, this is used as treatment for those who are overweight. However, it has also been used as treatment for those who are underweight. See, for example, "Life Without Bread," Wolfgang Lutz, 2000, pages 143-146. If you like to read, and you want to explore the science behind the nutritional controversy, get "Good Calories Bad Calories" by Gary Taubes.

WOW! u must be tiny. i'm 5'2 and i weigh near 118 and ppl still call me small [which i think im normal] but i suggest u get a second opinion from another doctor. an underlying sickness can be occuring [not to scare you].

You really need to push your doctor on this one as there could be many causes and it could be serious. Have they ruled out heart problems as I know people who have lost a lot of weight very quickly because their heart is having to work twice as hard as normal.

      (i wrote the story)

Thanks for commenting. Come to think of it, i dont personally have any heart issues but my mother did when she was young. Her heart was an abnormal size... i would think they would notice that though if i had it :S i've had x-rays done (though im terrified of x-rays... i dunno, strange phobia i guess.)
hmm... i guess i should ask for more tests, and some to do with my heart. i have a feeling my doc's not the brightest bulb in the box
      :P
I think ill do some research first though.
      thanks again!
