Forbidden love: is it normal to continue on in secret?

I was engaged to a guy I really love, but this month, my parents just broke us off. It was forced because they said he does not have a degree, isn't rich, and isn't 'a lawyer or doctor or engineer', and that this does not fit with their Chinese values or any Chinese tradition.

1st question: Is this normal in Chinese traditions? I thought this was something that no longer existed anymore.

2nd question: Is it normal that I listened to them, and broke it off to avoid drama and trouble, but he and I are seeing each other in secret? To everyone else, we are just friends or broken up, so that nobody knows this secret.

3rd question: I know we have to keep it secret from my family, but he wants to keep it secret from everyone else too, is that normal?

If a relationship has to be a secret, you probably shouldn't be in it. However I would say fuck them and be proud of your man and don't let your parents tell you how to live your life. Fine when you are a child, but you are an adult now. Stand on your own two feet!

go with your heart! If a relationship is a secret it strengthens the bonds. My sis was in a relationship where the guy's parents hated her (they were hassidic jewish), and the secrecy just make their love stronger.

Of course it's normal, it's bullshit that your parents don't want you to be with him jus because he's rich. What good is that gonna do when you have to live every day with someone you don't have feelings for? Marry for love, fuck what your parents say. It's your life, and you deserve happiness just as much as anyone else.

If I were you I'd tell my parents to STFU and stay out of my life how can you allow them to control you that way its your happiness and its your future. They have absolutely zero rights to run your life what if you give in and respect their wishes and break it off completely with this guy and you marry a guy that has all the criteria that your mom and dad is looking for and you are not happy you'll probably spend the rest of your life living in a mansion with a guy you don't truly love wishing you had the balls to stand up to your parents and had married your true love

At last you seem to have an opinion that goes against the thoughts of the others. I fear Trickydick is right.

Wisdom is not something you can be tough but it's always worth listening to. I predict misery if you carry on with this deception

I would never want to be with someone who let others control them and who didn't have free mind enough to do what they wanted and thought was best for themselves. Part of growing up and maturing is learning to make your own footprints on the world and knowing no ones going to be their to hold your hand as you do it. If you were unwilling to go without the leash and step out on your own it shows a mass amount of immaturity on your part. If you honestly believed you found the person you wanted to spend the rest of your life with that is your choice and yours alone and as much as your parents might want to influence the decision for them to flat out say jump and you say how high and actually follow through with it instead of thinking on your own shows you weren't ready for that type of commitment anyway.

How old are you? I think that if you really love this guy & he treats you well you should just say screw you to your parents & get back together with him. No offense, you're lucky he even still wants to be with you. If I were in a relationship with someone & they broke of an ENGAGEMENT with me because of their parents, I would say that you are way too into what others want & are not being mature at all. Follow your heart & do it quickly!

Wow, you know, I don't know much about Chinese traditions, but they're just fueling that Chinese Stereotype.

You know your culture, if you Chinese you must respect your parents wishes. I am English my wife is Chinese she pushed my Daughter hard to get her through Uni, She was also dating a lad and would not listen to us, he was her first love and broke her hart, it's take her 4 years to regain her self esteem and confidence You may think they are controlling and manipulating but they want the best for you.

I would die for my daughter to have a better easier lid than me and her Mum, we had nothing when we met and have gone without and worked all hours that god sends. We have a comfortable life but my daughter now understands that the world is full of unambitious losers who feed of none street wise girls like yourself.

Love soon turns sour when you can't pay the bills. Good luck with you deception.
Never put anything before your family.
I hope I did not preach to much
