Fired for asking for a raise!?

Yesterday I asked my boss for a raise since I need alot more money now, He simply up and fired me. I tried to say he cannot do that and he had security escort me out. I have been one of the most focused and hard working people at post office and I get fired! I threatened to see them in court and they laughed at me! I asked arround and it seems I am royally fucked, And since I have nothing else to lose I decided to ask you all for "advice".

    Whether or not he was justified in firing you would depend on your work history and how you asked him for a raise.

    There should be a type of government agency in your area that advocates for the rights of workers. You might want to seek out their advice on this matter since they will be familiar with the employment laws in your area.

        My mistake. Where I'm from most post offices are privately run by contracted businesses that are separate from the government.

        Anyway, employees rights agencies sponsored by the government are there to advise all working people regardless of their employment background.

    You could try both, you know.

    I don't know what country and what company you work for. But, the chances are, if you worked for a huge company - they could probably hire some really cut-throat lawyer to kick your a** if you actually summoned them to court.

    But, definitely look for a new job. Even if you won a court case against them, the chances of getting your job back (and keeping it) or receiving enough cash for the rest of your days are pretty slim.

      Great idea. Get fired --> sue company for firing you. Maybe he was doing a shitty job and asking for a raise was the last straw. You don't know the context. Sue first, ask questions later eh?

        Maybe he was "one of the most focused and hard working people". You don't know the context either. What if it was the boss' problem and it was a genuine violation of employee rights?

        tldr; we could fight forever about what the context was but we won't be able to fully piece the picture together. Pretty pointless to bicker about it.

    Well, I got my job back... It seems somebody said I was opening the packages rather than using the scanners, But security tapes proved this to be false. My boss has repeatedly apologized to me and given me the raise double over. Sadly I cannot legally return to work until Wednesday. I am still a bit pissed that they did not check the footage before making a move, Thats the work industry for ya.

    I asked for a raise on Friday. I did it because almost everybody that works there either gets fired or quits after 6 months, and another one just walked out, no explanation. Well I have been there almost 2 years, yet the boss keeps hiring another person that he seems to think is going to be smarter and better than me every time. Sometimes they are smarter and sometimes not as smart, but none of them can hack it, so I figured this was the moment to make my move, about a week after the latest wonder child walked out. Here is how I did it:

    I started coming in earlier because the other girl had been the early person.

    I started catching her work up, doing it better because I actually know what I"m doing. I made him a list of things he needs to give me answers to or things he needs to decide on.

    Then when I gave him something he asked for and he was getting ready to leave the office, I asked if I could walk out with him. He said sure, but this immediately made him nervous because he is usually the one to tell somebody to walk out to the truck with him, not vice versa. So when we got outside I called him by his name and gave a dramatic pause. Then I mentioned how yet another person had quit with no notice and again I was catching their work up and we were behind again. I did not accuse him of hiring badly or anything; I wanted him nervous, not defensive. So I said his name again and gave another pause so he would wonder if I was going to quit too, and that's when I told him I wanted a raise - $1 an hour. He stammered and said he would check some things and let me know on Monday.

    So today he called me in. Instead of $1 an hour, he said he was giving me $1.25 an hour raise, effective immediately.

    And this is a boss that I was told didn't give raises!

    I hope you didn't tell him, "I need more money, give me a raise" as if you did, I can see why he fired you. If this wasn't the case and you haven't done anything else that could have caused this, I would try to talk to him again or find a new job.

    Once you have shown your displeasure with something at work, you lose your trustworthiness and reliability to an employer. Especially a government job, where things like raises are clearly defined by rules, not your boss's desires.
    You screwed up big time; take it as a lesson and move on. Sue and you will make yourself "unemployable" to any employer who hears about the suit.

    This depends actually.
    If you were on probation they can fire you anytime for any reason no questions asked. If you are not on probation and are a full time worker unless he had probable cause for firing you I think maybe you could fight because you didn't get a 2 week notice.
