It makes me sick when people use their hands or fingers to mix food too. Normal!

I understand...of course I'm a weirdo and I eat almost everything with a fork and knife.

as long as hands are clean, then whats the problem? the best chefs in the world always use their hands when preparing food or mixing salads etc. she doesnt pick her nose or stick her fingers up her bum beforehand, does she?

    Its normal on both sides.
A lot of people do it, but I still find it gross.

Sometimes it requires improvisation. Last night I drank soup out of a cup because I was too lazy to wash a bowl and spoon. I've eaten yogurt and ice cream with a fork because no spoons were available. And sometimes fingers are the best tools available for the job. Not ideal, but it works.

My friend ate cereal out of a cup simply because he saw people drinking soup out of cups. Sounded weird at first, but what is a cup if it's not a tall bowl with a handle?

I've eaten cereal from a cup a few times. It really is inferior to using a bowl. The milk to cereal ratio gets all thrown off depending on the method of consumption. If using a spoon you get too little milk, and if tipping and drinking you get too much.

Yeah it's gross but it's not abnormal. I wouldn't do it but I have seen people that do.

I'm not sure. Just a peeve of mine. I'm guessing this must NOT be normal!? Haha.

To be honest, I was being very analytical. I'm not sure I'd mix sauce with my fingers either (or eat yoghurt, say). I was just hoping we'd think about why we do things, rather than just accepting what we do without question. I think howaminotmysel-flyingsquirrel picked up on this because her question is the one I wanted to ask too. So, yes, why?

P.S. You can always put the ball back in my court and ask me why I wouldn't do it either. I'll already admit I'm not sure I have a good answer.

Well, there are many things I do throughout the day with my hands, even after washing them they feel dirty and I see everything I've done that day while looking at them. Seeing them in my food just seems wrong. Now, holding finger foods, (chicken tenders, fries, etc..) my finger doesn't make it's way inside the food as it would if the food didn't have much consistency.

MY fingers can touch my food. But mixing gravy or condiments should be done with utensils.

I don't get this. How do you eat pizza? With a knife and a fork? What about sandwiches? Why can some food touch your fingers and some can't? What's the difference?

Either way, it's just seeing it and the idea of it that makes me sick.

I don't see the problem. Of course human skin is rife with strep and fungi, but that doesn't seem to be a problem. If you think fingers are a problem, consider the mouth. Which is also...not really a problem. Mythbusters (in an exploration of the concept of Double Dipping) showed that food is exposed to far, far more bacteria just by being in the open than it is by having mouth germs exposed to it.
