Film hipster?

Am I a pretentious film hipster?

I have a love of cinema from the films of David lynch and werner herzog to films like due date, for every cinematic masterpiece I also want a mindless film of mindless action.

But recently every single critically acclaimed film has left me angry and extremely disappointed ( minus 12 years a slave)

As a horror fan the hype behind cabin in the woods got me exited, it was hailed as original and the best horror in years, wasn't scary, wasn't funny, wasn't original, it was doing what scream was doing 10 years ago.

Gravity was hailed as a modern masterpiece, it looked amazing, cinematography, sound design and set pieces were incredible but every line from every characters mouth made me want to get up and leave the cinema, it was extremely cliche with forced melodrama ( no one taught me how to pray)

The Lego movie, hailed as one of the best children's films in years, I'm not the target demographic buy that's not relevant, monsters inc is a special film to me and up is one of the best films in the past 5 years, I love a good kids film.

Lego movie looked amazing but the characters were annoying, the story was cliche and boring ( again kids film isn't an excuse, up has a unique and melancholic story) it wasn't funny and the twist was predictable, shameless marketing and poorly constructed saccharine nonsense.

Is anyone else facing constant disappointment? I get exited

You can't choose what you like.

Unfortunately some people have a more 'narrow' taste than others, which means it's more of a challenge for them to find something that meets or exceeds their expectations.

Some people also have a taste that doesn't perfectly align with the average cinema-goer, so box office hits won't necessarily appeal just because they draw big crowds.

I'm pretty similar, and it can get frustrating.

The whole 'hipster' thing only really applies if you're being pretentious e.g. liking things that aren't mainstream just because they aren't mainstream, rather than enjoying them because they entertained or moved you in some way.

I think there's a wonderful sense of discovery in finding a film that has been overlooked by critics or under-rated. It's like finding a buried gem, or something underappreciated. It's actually a lot of the reason why I watch film, to unearth these treasures. That's why I so often stray from the mainstream and the blockbuster films.

There was a guy called Jerry Harvey who programmed a cable tv station in the 80's based on this very premise. He screened films that he felt had been criminally overlooked or unfairly bashed by critics. The station (Z channel) built a huge cult fanbase and following. It's amazing how many people out there actually crave the obscure pictures that movie producers are so disinclined to finance.

Haha it did take awhile when I first compiled it for a friend a week or so ago. This was a simple copy and paste job.

I love Sunset Boulevard, and kingofcarrotflowers you should watch that as a Lynch fan as Lynch has stated it is one of his all time favourite movies.
I like quite a few on your list and love that you included boiler room. Pretty overlooked that one and when I saw Wolf of Wall Street recently I actually compared it to Boiler Room and think I still prefer Boiler room.

Some like it hot is a classic and a real favourite of mine. Thanks for adding to the list :)

This is why I never read reviews and hate knowing what a film is about before I see it . I much prefer to watch blindly, less room for disappointment.

I don't think you get what Cabin in the Woods was going for...

Also I think Tarantino is a hack. I've never seen 12 years a slave though.

It was a satire commentary on horror films,

It failed at it miserably, and that quote is bot my opinion of it, it's the general public's so they're the ones nor getting it

I started reading your post and by "every single critically acclaimed film has left me angry and extremely disappointed" I was thinking how shitty (even annoying and corny) Gravity had been. Then you said it... lol

I feel the same, what was the last movie you watched that impressed you?

I recently watched Woody Allen's "To Rome, with love" and enjoyed it thoroughly! (despite the Rotten Tomatoes rating being less than 50% fresh)

It'd be 12 years a slave, best experience I've had in the cinema, I was late to it but there's a theatre in my town that has a cheap cinema/roll up projector.

I went expecting to be disappointed by both film and theatre, the screen was massive, the sound was brilliant, chairs comfy and the film is one of the few films that surpassed my expectations.

The only other acclaimed film of the past few years that I've seen in which I think it deserves the hype would be amour, I'm a fan of haneke anyway but it's amazing how he can go from the vicious satireisation and darkness of funny games to the tenderness of amour.

After my recent string of disappointments I try not to read much into reviews, especially imdb, even though I always find myself on rotten tomatoes or metacritic after viewing a film and I always have to hear the opinion of the good doctor Mark Kermode,

I've never seen a film of his, I enjoy the premise of his slightly quirky but neurotic humor, annie hall is on my list next I might check this one out too though.

Sorry I misread, last film I saw that impressed me, I watched Philadelphia yesterday, tom hanks is my favorite actor and it competently pulled the heartstrings, I also saw soylent green for the first time today, incredible film, unfortunately I knew the twist already and was waiting for the famous line the whole way through, although all these years I've watched the simpsons not realising the diepod scene is a homage to a brilliant scene.

Anyway I've rambled long enough I can't help but spam you with music and films when I see you haha :p

But what was the last film that impressed you?

That IMPRESSED me, I have to say it was Synecdoche New York, but I think that it may have been two, maybe three years or so ago... I thought about it for months.... I'm quite sure you would/will/have liked it!
