Fetishes: nature or nurture?

Do you believe that the fetishes you have are something you were born with, or something you grew to enjoy through exposeure and experience?

In my unscientific opinion it's probably a combination of nature and nurture.

This is anecdotal evidence so it probably doesn't count for much, but at least three people in my family (myself included) have different fetishes, so we were probably predisposed to liking the kinky stuff in the first place.

The exact type of fetish is probably where the nurture aspect comes (heh heh) into play, because you need exposure to certain stimuli in order for a fetish to develop (interestingly, I've read that rats have been conditioned to have fetishes by exposing them to certain objects or pieces of clothing material when they mate).

It's exposure combined with whatever fucked up shit lies in the subconscious mind. If the thing you expose yourself to strikes a nerve with the crazy shit in your subconscious it becomes somewhat fixed and turns to a fetish.

I think it partly depends on the fetish. For instance if domination and submission count, I can easily believe those have a biological component. Others seem too culturally specific, or just to out there to be anything but learned. (e.g. latex clothing or vore)

Given that domination/submission happens in both directions between the genders, I don't see how it could be biologically based: surely that could only be so if only one gender is always dominant and the other always submissive?

Other fetishes are about specific objects or practices being associated with arousal and the arousal then becoming dependent upon (addicted to?) the object or practice.

The most common fetish I come across working on adult sex lines are young men who are attracted to much older women: I've had quite a few men in their 20's become quite obsessed with me - I'm 68.

I can also tell what's "trending" on internet porn by the number of requests I get, most of which are violent to women: eg choking, deep throat gagging and so on. My opinion of porn is that because it only relaetes to the physical sexual level ultimately it's unsatisfying, so has to be continually "dressed up" with more and more additional fetishes: a bit like eating junk food all the time and trying Macka's latest specials but never having a good healthy satisfying meal. Just my opinion .....

You again. Once more claiming deep personal involvement with the subject under discussion while demonstrating a remarkably shallow understanding.

Not saying you're lying or anything, it's just a funny coincidence.

          Coincidental with what?

Do you know what the term "ad hominem" means? As I understand it, it's a tactic used in discourse to attack or criticise someone else without addressing what s/he is actually saying. In other words, lazy, juvenile and pointless

Ah, using formal logic terms now are we? How about "non sequitur"? You know that one? Good, good. I said D/S may have a biological component. You responded by pointing out that these preferences are not exclusively sex-linked. To illustrate why that doesn't follow, consider this version:

"I believe musical talent may have a biological component."
"Doubt it, both men and women can be musicians."

How is it a fetish if you don't enjoy it? Do you know what a fetish is?

    Good question.
    I've got no answer, though.

I voted nurture. Most of fetishes have been something that I've been exposed to either online or through various other people. Anal stimulation was something that I read about online and through various experimentation have come to enjoy through the years. Bondage is something I actually used to tease someone about while secretly I was online researching various bondage methods. Ironic thing is now I would really like to be tied up and teased/pleased by that person but I don't think It will ever happen. Kind of a deep dark fantasy of mine.

I was exposed to oral sex and other fetishes online before sexual intercourse, and that gave me a fetish for those things, sometimes more strongly desired than actual intercourse. As far as something you're born with, I think anal sex could cause more problems than pleasure, but I have fantasized about it.

I assert that both genetics and environmental circumstances contribute to the development of sexual paraphilias among other pathological conditions, but I don't wish to dwell on that matter.

I'd have to say from experience a bit of both though mostly nature.

I'm not sure. Probably both. I guess it depends on which ones.

I have an extremely rare and highly specific fetish, which clearly originated through repeated frequent exposure to a fairly rare and highly specific activity. There is no reasonable doubt that nurture played a role in the origin of my fetish.

As for nature, I suspect some individuals are genetically more predisposed to developing a fetish than others. Like I say, my fetish is based on a highly specific practice which is fairly rare, but common enough that a large number of people in total have experienced it. However even with the reach of the Internet, I've googled upon or been in contact with less than ten individuals worldwide who share my fetish, and that's including the maybes along with the definitelys.

So my best guess is, it's both nature and nurture.
