Females - what do you prefer your gender to be called?

I often wonder what I should refer to women as. We live in such a politically correct culture. When you may be referring to someone of African descent, you could call them "black" or "african-american," and it all depends upon the person's perception as to what they prefer. It's always a gamble whether or not you're going to offend someone, so using the most "scientific" or accurate terminology would be best.

However, in casual conversation, "females" is such a sterile, boring term. So what do you prefer? Personally, I hypothesize that it depends upon a person's maturity as to what term they use to refer to their own gender, or the opposite sex.

For example, if you call other women "girls," and you're twenty-five years old, what does that say about you? What do you prefer a man refers to your gender as?

Some are more respectful than others. I've omitted most slurs, such as "broad," etc. IDK. Tell me what you think.

TL;DR - WHAT DO YOU CALL FEMALES (OR YOURSELVES)?

I wish there was a female equivalent for "guy". It's friendly, informal and neutral enough. Yeah, the options we have are quite limited

  • "Women, ladies, or females" are proper titles for adults of my gender. What I find ridiculous is when we are referred to as "girls" and adult males are referred to as "men", respectively.

    BTW

DiscoDuck, you "are" a curiosity. You actually refer to your mother as a bitch? She MUST be deaf and you are covering your mouth when you say this. If I had a child that called me that, I would make it clear to them that their behavior was unacceptable. You are the obvious product of poor parenting. I feel so sorry for you.

When in doubt, use "women". "Females" is kind of dehumanising.

My high school graduation the valedictorian was a guy. (Keep in mind the majority of my class was black.) During his speech he asked all of the black men to stand up. He said a little something, asked everyone to applaud, and they all sat down. Next he asked all of the females to stand. Everyone applauded, he said no special speech, and everyone sat down. Obviously there are two things wrong with this. The way he said "females" was insulting too.

  • Between ages 0-20, "girls" is appropriate. 21-50, "women". 51+, "ladies".

Well, if I was on a chat site and I was talking to a male, I'd like to be called 'hunny' or 'Hun' and I don't mind 'babe'.
    Depending on the topic too.
    E.g. You're a pretty lady
    Damn girl, you're hot
    How old are you, miss/madam?

I am 35 and I still refer to women who are my age as "girls." When I was 25 I dated a 28-year-old and I figured she wouldn't want to be called a girl, so I called her a "young woman" and she said that term made her feel old and that I should call her a girl.

There is no one term that is always going to be right. It's all down to judgement of the situation you find yourself in. A lot of older women prefer "girls" because it belies age, whereas some prefer "ladies" as it implies nobility. I sometimes use "women" or "females" humorously because it's so formal. But only where I know people will be amused by me saying, "Hello females".

If it's a mixed group and I can't judge their reaction to me classifying them, I play safe and refer to them as "everyone" regardless of them all being female.

I don't care what others call it but for me I like to say girls (and I am quite immature...). Woman sounds older and formal, Ladies can sound either funny or slightly rude as in hey lady, Females is usually for being overly-formal as a joke, Chicks I say that sometimes too, but usually referring a girl I don't really know/care about.

I think ppl call females a certain way when it comes as to how she carries herself or who she is.For example, why would I call an 18 yr old slut/hoe a lady if she doesnt respect herself? How could I call a beautiful 20 something year old female a women if I found out from word on the street that she was a slut/hoe when she was a bit younger even though she is now trying to become a "better" person.A slut will always be a slut.period.A faithful girl/women who waited and is always faithful to her man is what I call a lady/women.rare these days...

Anything is fine if its not mean spirited, or even if you feel mistreated, I personally find un PC words important, often valid. If a man or guy, or boy, or male, calls me a bitch because I have been rude or mean, odds are, I probably am being a bitch.

Gender means masculine or feminine. Sex is male or female. As a female, I'm trying to acknowledge that I'm no longer a girl but a woman. So i call myself a woman. Women should call themselves women to feel they are powerful and of a higher status than just "girl."

Just as long as it isn't Ma'am. ...I'm 18 and even I don't like to be called that.
If a guy that don't know all that well were to call me a "chick", I'd think it's pretty rude.

    I guess Ladies or Women.

  • I don't see why someone would really care what they're called.

Then again, it's really just a personal prefrense.

I supose, however, for a twenty-five year old "Girl" isn't politacally correct.

My parents always call me "chick" and this creates some funny looks at times. Then I'd have to explain the context of the name. It's short for "chickadee." A nickname that stuck.

But I do prefer the term "ladies." Don't know why, just do.

  • Women- used a certain way sound disrespectful.
Girls- Sounds young, though that could be a good thing
    Chicks- To some seems disrespectful
    Female-To formal
Ladies- okay but sounds weird in plural form.
So I mean it really depends on the situation I hate when guys say something along the lines of 'Hey women get over here' where as guys you can say 'Hey dude get over here' sounds completley different and not disrespectful. It depends on the situation really.
