Fear of rocks under water

I have a fear of rocks (and sometimes other things like logs or pipes, but it's mostly rocks) that are underwater. Not small rocks, but big, boulder-like rocks. Why is this? I can't go swimming in a lake or ocean where I know there are rocks, or where I can;t see the bottom, because I'll be afraid my foot will touch a rock. Is anyone else afraid of rocks that are underwater?

Even when I go kayaking, I hate looking over the edge of the kayak and seeing boulders that are underwater. It freaks me out to the point of having a panic attack. Is it normal?

YES! For me it's mostly logs, because that's what we've got around here. But big looming rocks creep me out too.
Those stagnant murky lakes full of submerged logs... omg.
I can be ON a log that's sticking out of the water and I'll be just fine, but I won't even want to touch the water with my finger because then it will be IN THE WATER WITH THE LOG.

I've got a similar fear. I'm afraid of pretty much anything I can't see underwater. From small objects like rocks and seaweed to large objects like boats/shipwrecks and cars (yes, cars.. Have an old lake nearby with a car that sunk to the bottom decades ago. Creepy.). Have yet to find a proper term for it. But it keeps me away from lakes that aren't crystal clear and keeps me very close to the beach while at the ocean.

Okay so I know you wrote this 12 years ago but I’m finally researching my fear of this exact same thing. Is there a name for this yet?

OMG i thought i was the only one

when i was a child around 10 we were in the river by my parents weekend house in the rubber boat we went in most if not all the weekend. This weekend

we were in the boat as usual when water got low i got out and pushed boat and cut my foot along the big toe

was rushed to hospital where i had at least 6 stiches in my toe.

thei now yeas and years and years and years later , left me with a phobia of

a, not swimming if i cant see the bottom
b, weary of rocks in water and have to wear jelly shoes or fins if i stand on a rock in the sea..

scuba diving left me in a panic ripped snorkel off etc.

then i grabed her anchor rope of the boat then fear subsided and i edged my way down the 80 feet of clear barbados sea, still keeping away from the rocks would love to know the phobia name for this .

I will jump of a ship into water off ropes etc cos sub consciously i know if its deep enough for boat my feet are fine

I was raised on a lake in Massachusetts. Had a motor boat at age 10. I was always scared about looking through the water at the "bottom". Stumps, rocks, just the bottom, you name it. NO ONE ever knew I had this fear, I thought it was that weird. Now at 59, I haven't completely beat this, but dealt with it by visiting the Caribbean, snorkeling, where you can (must) see everything in the crystal clear water. Natural stuff is easier. I still have trouble with man made stuff like pipes and shipwrecks. I snorkeled around Little Cayman Island by myself (22 miles!) and that helped, although this weird fear was still in the back of my mind. Seeing a nurse shark after swimming for 2 hours diverted my attention (LOL), however.

Yes I think it's normal, man it gets so bad. I was playing GTA5 and did a submarine level... Couldn't finish it because of the huge rocks/boulders/mountains under the water. I knew then it was so bad that I couldn't play my games haha

i have a similar fear of things in the water, it makes me shudder to think of swimming in the ocean or lake and to touch or be touched by a a log or anything that is floating just under the water, even seeing things just below the surface that I can't quite make out, send fear running thru me, i want to get away and out of the water, and all this with loving to kayak
one day i was kayaking in a slow moving river, and bottom was coming up, i could just make out the thick grass, when i passed a rock or log or something in the water, it took almost everything i had to not paddle away as fast as i could, i had a huge adrenaline rush and it took a long time to calm down and have that rush go away
if i was out in the ocean and the boat sank, i would be parlyzed by fear to approach a buoy that would save me from drowning for fear of the anchor chain that goes all the way to the bottom, the moss and things hanging off of the chain i could not see well, if at all, would scare me too much for me to swim over and hang on

I'm afraid of my feet touching anything under the water. I will not swim in a lake! when I'm snorkeling in the ocean and come over underwater plants I get really nervous and lift my feet as high as I can to avoid accidentally touching them. I cannot let my feet dangle EVER. I've never been water skiing because I would be to afraid to fall.

    I don't directly have it for rocks. But I don't like pipes underwater or places where I can't see the bodom, or plain dark water. Just freaks me out. No clue how this was caused either. I don't find it abnormal at all. Specially considering I couldn't even finish a level myself in Zelda Twilight Princess cause of it... Made my friend do it ^^;

OH MY GOD! I thought i was alone on this. I am completely TERRIFIED of huge rocks underwater and I have no idea why! Everyone makes fun of me for it...but I can't help it! I went parasailing a few weeks ago and they dropped me down to dip me in the water and there was this HUGE rock beneath me and I flipped out so bad. I was yelling and everything hahaha. I'm getting chills right now! What do you think could have instilled this fear in us?!

  • Leannem

It's weird because I don't remember anything happening in my past that would have caused this. I can remember the first time I started being afraid of rocks under water though, so if something happened to cause it, one would think that I would remember it. I just remember being in my dad's canoe one day and being afraid of the rocks in the water all of a sudden. Weird!

Yes! But not rocks... and im ok with going swimming in the ocean ect but i dont like not being able to see the floor. Im more scared of things like log flumes or water rides... all the mechanics under the water really freak me out. i have no idea why cos im not about to jump in. i still go on the rides i just dont like seeing all the mechanics working away... weird i know.

If they were not in water, would they still freak you out?

      Comment Hidden ( show )
  • Leannem

No, no experiences from when I was younger.

Not afraid of cutting myself on the rock.

Not afraid of weird sea monsters.

It's the rocks. I don't get it. It's completely irrational. I know I don't have anything to fear from the rocks, but the fear is still there.

I have the exact same fear.
I have never had an accident with a boat hitting a rock thats under water. I just got this fear some years ago, and i can't stand seeing rocks underwater. I just freak out when im in a boat and I see a rock. I would love to overcome this fear since I spend a lot of time at the sea side, and sailing, but I have no idea how.

    • To adress the poster - if you must swim in a river or sea, try finding one with a sandy bottom, it might make you rest easier.

Yes, it comes from the inherently Japanese fear of Rockzilla, the horrible giant rock monster from outer space that lies dormant beneath every lake, sea, creek, puddle and ocean.

Maybe it runs in families, but my brother and I both have a phobia of large rocks in water. My grandparents used to have a house on a large lake in NH. We'd boat all the time. If the water is deep (~50 feet) and suddenly we see a rock right there that you could stand on, totally freaks us out! We'd freak out, then my cousins would too. Don't know if it's because us or they felt it too, idk.
I also have the thing with pipes in the water, for like fountains. Don't know what it is, maybe that it's not natural? Even the ones at Bellagio during the daytime make me uneasy. Seeing them on at night (can't see the pipes) is fine though.
Someone earlier mentioned a buoy. I'm ok with the buoy itself, but never considered the chain holding it in place! Noooo! I just can't!

You have no idea how long I've been trying to find someone with the same fear, it's mostly logs and tree stumps underwater that spook me but any thing really that's big and murky freaks me out... to the point were going in the shallow water with my Jetske and looking at a tree stump right below you clutching onto the steering wheel if I'm about to fall off I'd love to get rid of this fear so I then go back to swimming whenever and wherever I want

Totally with everyone on this one.

I first noticed it when I was really young. I was brought up on a motor boat which was fine. I just had this weird fear of rudders, propellers anything to do with the underneath of a boat. My dad was playing and threw me into the sea off the side of the boat. I am pretty sure I had a panic attack and couldn't swim back to the boat because I simply couldn't go near the underneath of it - I swam all the way to shore.

Then it got worse, I went stand up paddle boarding - the water was nice - deep and dark. All of a sudden this great big glowing boulder appeared. I knew it was a boulder but fear took over - thought I was going to have a heart attack and I just paddled away as fast as I could.

Shipwrecks make me feel so uneasy - even the start of the film Titanic, when it shows the shipwreck lying on the bottom of the sea - I have to hide behind a pillow.

I get scared at anything that doesn't look like it should be in the water. I went and looked off the side of the pier and there was a car tire looming underwater. I thought the end was near just from looking at it.

It is bizarre and I find it funny that I am genuinly scared. Everyone else thinks im a nut. Its nice to know im not alone.

I thought I was the only person, my family went on a holiday all together to Cyprus and we went to the bit where was apparently best for snorkeling When I got in the water there was big rocks all over the bit of sea then I freaked out and all my family just laughed at me but I don't like not knowing what's under the rocks or on them or snything.

OMFG. I thought I would never find people with the same fears, which is stupid to think but any who. I have ALWAYS had this fear of certain things in the water like logs, which is the weirdest thing considering it's natural. Story time. When I was younger ,probably around 8 or 9, my uncle had this beach house in florida and me and family went there for vacation. So I'm swimming and there are logs and driftwood in the water and I was body surfing ,so I kind of end up like with my head and part of my body like caught on this stump and nothing bad really happened I just had the feeling like I was being sucked up into it which really scared me. It's not so much I'm scared to be around those stagnant lakes with those logs and fallen trees in them but I am absolutely TERRIFIED of falling in one. I feel if I fall near a tree that is the water like I have to get out immediatley or my soul is going to like evaporate or I'll be sucked in be evil trees. The hulls of boats and underneath big docks scare the shit out of me too,not so much rocks ,it mostly depends on the landscape and in general just if it looks terrifying or not.I will never stop swimming, I'm just specific on where I'll swim lol. TMI.

Went kayaking on the Allegheny River three years ago, the area I was in was approximately 10 feet deep. As I was going along, I started to see plant life peeking up at me. It made me nervous, but I was all right. Then all of a sudden I came up on an object, since I was going too fast there was no way I could avoid it. As I got closer, I realized it was a FUCKING REFRIGERATOR. It was completely submerged but I still grazed it with the kayak. I panicked so badly I almost lost consciousness.

One more comment cuz I thought I was the only one with this fear! Glad I'm not the only one! Surfing in Hawaii, went far from other surfers to warm up, stood up, realized there was a sheeeeeeit ton of coral under me. Couldn't see the end or the bottom if it. Fell and latched on to my board, get this.. Friggin touched the tip of my toe... I flipped the fuck out, got outta the water haha

People have all kinds of fears and I would think that yours is only a problem if it's ruining what sounds like fun for you otherwise. There is therapy put there and therapists won't think you are strange.

I wonder if it's because it's something that you don't feel "belongs" there... like maybe because normally we associate boulders and logs with being on the ground and not under water? Or maybe because by being underwater it sort of creates an "illusion" of boulders or logs, distorting it, making it seem unrealistic and thus making you feel unstable/out of control?

I have the same fear! exactly! i would definitely call it a phobia. I think that it stems from a childhood experience. My friend scared me by saying that this rock that was covered in seaweed, junk, etc. was a "rockfish" and that it was disguising itself as a rock until something got close enough to eat- at which point it would spring to life and attack. i was maybe 3. scared me pretty bad. I'm still instinctually afraid. obviously, i know that that is not true, but still, large mysterious things in the ocean really scare me, still. :(

It could possibly be that you're scared of getting crushed by one of these things. Yes, it is normal. I have friends that are scared of huge rocks too. Do I think it's normal? Yeah.

  • I too feel apprehensive and a bit of anxiety around boulders, trees etc. underwater. Its good to have a healthy respect and concern for water period - such a powerful force - and any possible hazards beneath. Thats not irrational IMO. But not sure about extreme to the point of panic attacks.

I don't like the thought of things lying on the sea bed, especially things that shouldn't be there, like shipwrecks.
It's not nice when your foot touches something in the sea, maybe it's because we think it might be an animal or something!
Or could it be that you're afraid of cutting your foot on the rock?
Maybe you had a bad experience in the sea when you were younger?
