Fear of heights- scared i may jump- anyone else?

When I was young I was never afraid of heights- I would go out on balconies 40+ floors up and lean over the edge. I would climb up to heights over 30 feet.
This has changed. Now I'm in my 30's and I feel sick to go on a balcony. I'm not afraid to fly or drive over bridges. It's when I'm in a situation where I have access to the side and could fall over. I actually feel like I can't trust myself, that I could have a mental lapse and just jump!
I have no desire to hurt myself at all, but even if I'm near a railing at any reasonable height, I'm terrified that I may just "bug out " and jump.
Zero fear of flying or standing right at the window at the heighest floors in any city. As long as it's not an open window, I'm totally fine.
Can anyone else relate????

I get a weird feeling when I'm standing near one of those windows in high apartments like I could just jump out - without a 2nd thought it passes but I get that feeling all the time

Well, see if I think about it, If I was in a dangerous situation, for example, if I was in a burning building or a plummeting airplane, I would jump - I would trust my intended landing on my own feet rather than the deaths that come out of plane crashes and buildings... Maybe you have some subconscious fear of being in that kind of situation and really trusting in yourself. I'd say it's a great thing. Don't worry. You seem honest with yourself in an amazing way.

Same here. I'm fear of heights and when I get into a situation I'm scared I could freak out and jump because that's just the thing I don't want to happen to me. I'm afraid of a force inside me that could make me to do it. I'm a 36 year old man. That's why I prefer some kind of railing that I could be grasping although there's no need for that.

If you are scared of heights, don't watch this:

i feel the same a lot, like when i'm sat at the front of the bus i have an urge to open the doors and jump out when it's moving. i think it may be realated to the fact that are bodies haven't changed in time yet the way we live has and we don't face the danger we once did so there's a lot of built up testosterone and adreneline which wants to be released and these situations provide that satisfaction

I'd say normal, if i get scared of heights sometimes i feel i could jump off by mistake or by an impulse because i don't want to so much. But then only sometimes, so i'm never quite sure.
If your not in control for example sitting in a plane and there's no way you can jump then you won't get it.

I have a tiny fear of flying. Not like: OMGOSH I CANNOT SET FOOT IN THIS PLANE, just if there is turbulence I feel a bit nervous. But I know what you feel. I sometimes feel EXACTLY the same.

Oh my! Same thing! I live on the 18th floor and when I go onto the balcony I get queezy. Like it would be so easy to just fall or jump even though I would never just jump. It's just the thought.

When I was young heights were absolutely no problem. I am now 65 and over the last 15 years the fear of heights has become a paranoia. Sitting at this computer if I think about heights for example steel workers walking out on girders over NY, I get terrible frightening sensations without seeing the pictures. 5 years ago I went on a ski chair lift for a ride with my family, I just wanted to jump off it so badly to get away from it, I was not bothered if it killed me. I then walked down the mountain, taking 3 hours. Movies involving heights, I just can not watch.

I've recently identified this feeling/anxiety. 33 yr old male, successful, generally happy. I too loved going out on balconies as high up as 60 floors when I was a child but, yes, this sudden feeling that I may test fate and leap over the side (with no suicidal desire) of a balcony make my palms sweat--wherever I am with the thought. I look up at apt buildings in Manhattan and now hope that I never make a friend who lives on a high floor. A minimal fear of flying as well, but you're right above in that it takes a lot of work to jump out of a plane--only a railing stands between you and a free fall off a balcony. I also know I've always had a certain anxious feeling when I enter room with very high ceilings; I'm not certain if that's related but it may lean towards a general fear of heights or high things..??

I have the exact same fear - I'm a happy person, successful etc... but when ever i get up high, really high - I wanna jump so bad I don't, I can't trust myself close to the edge - wtf I thought I was the only one - why do we feel this way - it kind of freaks me out

Me too:) I looked it up on the internet and it said this urge to jump is actually a fear of heights and is normal. Your post came up to so thank you for sharing I see other people go through the same thing as me and a couple of my friends too. I wonder if it has somthing to do with aging because I used to never be afraid of heights when I was young too. I find it is also starting to go away since I moved to an apartment on the 18th floor. It still comes back when I think about it but other than that I don't fear heights as much as I used to. Thanks again.
