Expensive jewelry

They say diamonds are a girl's best friend but I'm a girl and I don't see the appeal.

People will spend thousands, even millions on small jewelry pieces..I just can't imagine why I would spend that much on a shiny rock. Like, what purpose does it serve? Are people actually impressed? I feel like the only statement it makes is "Fuck you. Look at how much money I can waste".

All I can think about is how many other useful things could've been purchased with that money. Or how someone much less fortunate could have their lives changed around completely from the money spent on something so insignificant. It baffles me.

I totally agree. The jewelry industry capitalizes on this and makes huge profit margins.

I agree! If I ever meet a man or woman who wants to marry me, I'm gonna tell them not to waste money on fancy rings or jewelry for me. I think it's just silly to pay thousands for diamonds when you can get lab-created lookalikes for dirt cheap. I'd rather spend money on a house or something functional. Or an activity that would make good memories.

The only jewelry I wear regularly is my grandmothers engagement ring. I haven't taken it off since she gave it to me.

I like handmade jewelry or stuff you would find on etsy or in an antique store.

Valuable stones will do nothing but increase in value. They are an incredibly good investment, so anyone who wants to beat the current interest rates, (which are just laughable) and has the money, can't go wrong buying quality jewelry. I think it's actually a better investment than art, and much less perishable. If you had the money honey, you would also be buying the shiny stuff.

I have to disagree with you here. A case can be made for investing in precious metals. But jewelry has a retail markup that can be 200% or more, so it is not really a very good investment, and the precious stone market for the individual is not very good, because few jewelry setters have an interest in buying loose stones from an individual, at least not at a price that matches it's value.

If I was an old pirate like you, I would keep my rubies and emeralds in the treasure chest I buried them in, and just remember where I marked the X.

No different from many other things in life. Cars, shoes, clothes, homes.
If you want to spend ridiculous money, you can. On anything...

But every example you named is something useful. Jewelry serves no real purpose outside of aesthetics

I know what you mean but is a $300k car more useful than a Hyundai?
Doesn't that then just become about aesthetics & want factor Are designer shoes & clothes more useful than Target items?

& this is coming from someone that splurges a lot

I want target footy pyjamas and toe socks instead of jewellery.

I never considered that before. Good point. I still wouldn't do it though. Lol

I love jewelry, but I buy the fake kind. If I can get simulated fake diamond earrings for $5, then why the would I spend $25,000 on them?

I agree, but this could be said of so many things. I don't understand why people spend money on a tee shirt from a designer when they could buy an identical one for a fraction of the price from any generic store. I don't understand why people spend hundreds, even thousands, of dollars on ugly handbags just because they are covered in the letter "C". People like wasting money on lot's of useless stuff. I have wasted plenty myself.

I would love to have met the salesmen who coined the phrase "you get what you pay for" just so he could sell someone the exact same thing for more money. He may have been the greatest salesmen the world has ever known. Not saying that sometimes a higher priced item isn't of greater quality, but there are many times when it is not, and quality isn't determined simply by price.
