I'm the same way. But the way I see it is that I'm making an effort to change my life and be healthy while some fat slob is at home sitting on the couch with a bag of chips. So people there aren't going to judge you for trying to better yourself

Once you get a routine going you went feel self conscience about anything. Honestly once you start doing it you will feel stupid about being "shy" about this.

You aren't alone on this subject though. I tried really hard to get one of my friends to come to the gym with me and he had the same problem.

I hate the gym except for doing weights. Personally, I prefer kick boxing or even tai bo as it gets rids of anger induced stress. If you're new to a class, stay at the back so you can drop out for a drink (or heart attack) and no-one notices or cares.

Start off small by walking the dog. Even being out of the house stops you eating and it's great exercise.

    Try a sport instead.

  • Just go dammit!! Whoever says you have to feel good (ie not afraid) to do something is talking out of their ass.

99% of the best decisions you'll ever make in life your emotions will be screaming out against it.

Make your own gym. Start doing push-ups and sit-ups everyday. Fill milk jugs with rocks or sand or something for free-weights. There are some pretty creative exercises that do not require special equipment and will still get you into shape pretty good. It really just depends on how motivated you are. Infomercials on television are great at convincing suckers that buying their special equipment will make them fit, but the truth is that it is all in the mind of the person.

Yeah I felt awkward going to the gym the first time, than I realized so do most people at the gym. Nobody really stares at you, everyone has their own goals and things to do.

If your not comfortable going to the gym you could try working out in a quiet park or even your home.

PS: I look like a fool running on the treadmill, but nobody seems to stare or laugh, which is surprising.

  • Yeah me too. I'm scared I'm going to bump into people I know with my body all sweaty and jiggly...uggh...thats why I hate exercising in public

I feel like this too. I'm really unfit, and I think that for some reason everybody would stare at me or laugh at me if I went. It sounds stupid saying it, but it is a genuine fear that I have. I have tried exercising at home, but it is much more difficult than I thought it would be. You're not alone on this one, OP.

  • I didn't either but once you get inside the gym, you realise no one cares what you're doing. Every one is so focused on doing their own thing you could probably turn up in hot pink spandex and no one would notice nor care.
