Ever make things with intent to sell them but then can't bear to?

Have you ever crafted handmade items with an absolute intention of selling them, but then change your mind because you think whoever buys it won't treat it right? Or for some other reason?

Please comment! What are your fears or reservations about letting your item go?

Yes, I've done this before. 26
No, I don't care as long as I get paid. 3
I care, but I manage to not let it get to me.SERENITY NOW! 3
I put a curse on it before I sell it to punish any mishandling. 6

All my family do this. My sister took on a commission to paint someone's cat and then couldn't give up painting (to be fair, it was an absolutely wonderful piece of work). So she got a print done, had it framed, and gave it to the commissioner for free. My mum and I have similar stories. It's easier for me now, though, because much of what I do is now electronic.

Oh my god I do this all the time. I have so many pieces of unfinished work because I know that once its finished, it is going to someone else...it is so hard!

I've never done this, but wish I would.

Knowing I'm creating art as a gift for someone else always motivates me to make it as good and innovative as possible, which makes it all the more painful to give away. That's the irony. I have to promise something to someone to achieve the quality I want in my personal work, but that means always losing it at the end.

I wish I was just more of a prick and would say to these people "Actually I wanna keep it. Here's some flowers / chocolates / generic card from a shop instead."

That's a really good point. I do that too! If it's for someone else, I really throw myself into it. But then when I look at the end result, I want to keep it.

      • OK but why? Do you think they will mistreat it? Misunderstand it? What?

Not quite. The reasons are a bit more pathetic. I just wanted to please people and I wanted to please them so much that I put much more effort into it then I would for myself. I can do things for others that I can't do for myself.

          • Next time, make 2!

Oh, wait-then you'd still have a dilemma-which one to keep and which one to give away!

Ya, I make stuff. I've sold a bunch, but some I can't let go of. They just came out so good or it was the first one of the particular style or something, so I keep them

It is easy to get attached to something you made with your own hands personaly i dont think i would have a hard time selling it...

I think what you meant to ask was
"Ever make things with intent to sell them but then no one wants them?"
I'm sure it happens to you all the time.

    • And by the way, don't EVER think to know anything about who I am, what I think or what I know. Loser. Just because YOU suck, don't take it out on others you don't even know.

Judging by your reaction I've hit a soft spot. I do apologize for showing you the reality that is your "art".
I would also like to point out your speaking of my false in judging someone I don't know, where you have done just the same and so eloquently informed me that "I suck".
It's sad, you're just typical, but I've gathered everything I need from you.
I think I've done my job here.
