Even volumes, numbers

Ever since I can remember, whenever changing the volume on my TV, Stereo, anything... I can't stand having the number uneven. I'll go completely out of my way to change the volume to an even number, but try not to make it noticeable.

Likewise, if I often go up two volumes, I'll go down two volumes before going back up again, to even things out.

Is this some form of Obsessive-compulsive disorder? Or am I just crazy.. :P

Totally normal, definitely not OCD. OCD has a major identity crisis, people seem to think it's people being a bit anal for the sake of it, but it's a genuine mental health condition where people need to find an unusually high amount of order in their lives.
What you're experiencing is in my opinion down to autism. Sounds crazy but we're all on the autistic spectrum, I have the same issue as you. Also I have to wear odd socks. Takes all sorts I suppose...

I do that too. I just feel more comfortable if the number ends with a 0, 2, 5, or an 8. Maybe it has something to do with being a programmer, and dealing with a lot of binary significant numbers. (8, 16, 32, 64, 128, etc)

Even more annoying is a volume control with no numbers. I feel a little compelled to find an exact number, like 50% or 25%.

Good to know I'm not the only one.

  • I do that too except with 5s. Like if it's 14 I'll out it on 15 or 41 it has to be on 40

Yea sounds like mild OCD, it REALLLY pisses me off if any sort of sliding scale like volume on a TV, is hard to get to an even number.

I was using a simulator for diffraction (doing a physics degree) And I couldn't get a sliding scale for distance to stop at a round number, was so pissed off ^^

Also if I eat out of a tray of something like shop bought mince pies, apple pies, teacakes etc, I always have to make sure they're even after (have to eat 2)

wow thats so cool i do that too
not the volume up or down thing though.
i also if i can make it at 12, 24, or 42 if i can i really try unless the volume is just akward at those levels.

i also have that weird desire to be even when i touch surfaces, like when i move my figer on a table or myself i have to move it back in the same direction. just to make things even. idk y but i cant not do it

It's just a little quirk, nothing to be worried about. Just be grateful that you don't obsessively count numbers to perfect square roots.

Hi, I don't know if my comment/question will help or do the exact opposite, but: what about channel numbers?, do you have problems with odd channel numbers?

As someone said everyone has some "little quirks" but that doesn't make it normal :o)

Nope, odd channel numbers don't bother me. Just the volume... maybe because I have control over it (else the channel number determines what I watch)

      haha

Yeah it's a little OCD but we all have our little quirks. I cannot stand to see chairs pushed away from the table and ppl not sitting in them. I'll go around the table after class pushing in chairs when no one is around to watch.
