Empathy/respect towards meat

Wasn't exactly sure how to word this one, but lately I've been feeling pretty empathic and respectful for the animals that end up having to be grinded up for the meat that goes on my plate.

It's not enough to turn me on a vegetarian diet, the fact is I grew up around meat and love the taste too much to just stop eating it. But before I eat a steak or a piece of chicken as I say grace I always end a mentality note saying "And I give my thanx for the animal that was forced to sacrafice its life so I may eat this meat." Sort of as a token of appreciation for the short life I know this poor cow or chicken or pig had to endure and die for.

I also do it for eggs since well a chicken had to give up its natural rights to produce a fertile egg in order for me to have eggs that don't have chicks in them. And I've also being doing it for fish who had to struggle in a net to be served to me.In fact I've been doing it for any piece of meat, seafood or any other product produced by animals dairy included.

Again I don't think I could ever become a vegetarian but is it normal to feel sympathy and/or respect towards an animal destined to be on my plate?

Sorry for the diversion from the original post. This is a pretty sensitive question, and one I grapple with.

I think our native communities do give thanks, and so should we. But I also think we need to look at alternatives. Thank you for thought provoking post!

I'm eating a steak right now its delicious and yummmmmmmy cows are stupid and only meant to be eaten like all other animals on the planet I see no reason to feel empathy for mindless beasts all they do is eat, shit, fuck and sleep

I have felt the same way for as long as I can remember. I'm also a bit like you because I'm not giving up meat any time soon (although...the meat/dairy industry can be quite disgusting...) I don't think people in general are sufficiently aware of where our food comes from. Even though we may know about it - just as we may know about something horrible that we saw in the news - we don't really feel it. Personally, I feel that I've become calloused to its origins even though I feel the empathy that you've described.

I used to challenge my mum when I was younger by saying things like "if that fish/chicken/cow was your pet, would you still eat it? Why not? Isn't it the same as the other animals?" It's a double standard that is slightly baffling and amusing.

Of course these creatures deserve your respect. They die for us to live, whether they like it or not.

I have respect for all living walks of life even those created by man which would include the cow. I don't view any animal as worthless they're all worthy enough to be alive. That is probably why I feel this way towards my meat.

And I'm pretty sure there are wild cows though techinally they are called buffalos Water Buffalos to be precise which is were the domesticated cow has its origins, hmm I could be wrong I'll have to look that up but every domesticated animal has a wild counterpart.

But whether an animal is wild or bred by humans doesn't really matter to me feeling respect for animals even the cow, that get turned into meat.

Again I'm not against slaughtering animals for food I agree that its a necessity yet it just wouldn't hurt to pay some respect for the animal forced to be sacraficed for such a necessity.

  • I think of it as more of a mercy killing than a slaughter. Think about what I am saying.

Cow: Can you think of a more worthless animal. They just stand around and eat grass. They have no KNOWN ambitions or desire, other than mating and they are rather pathetic and sad.

Honestly, if I were a cow, please eat me. I would rather feed starving children than live my life in a daze of nothingness.

ALSO. HUMANS CREATED COWS. There are no known WILD cows and the breeds of cows we have now were domesticated and modified through YEARS of manipulated breeding and thinning out the weaker cattle to get the cows we have now. So, if we didn't EAT cows, we wouldn't HAVE cows today. There whole purpose is for our food and they should at least try the little bit of life we grant them.

just because animals dont have the capacity to feel and think at the same level as humans do doesnt make their lives less valuable, humans have this ridiculous superiority complex and because of the bible and other man made inventions have come to believe that animals were put on this earth for the sole purpose of consumption, which isnt true.
      i think its disgusting,
and bud the wise, arnt you and your gf fat anyways? it could do you some good to trade in your steaks for a salad once in a while....

      • Ha! Well said ...

And Bud, don't dish it out - which you do in bucket after explosive bucket of the most rambling, crude, abusive, obtuse and mean spirited rants; when you can't take even the smallest repartee.

      • Okay, this one I will tackle before leaving as I am already running late. I will do this in outline form.

        1. I'm not fat, unlike you I am not ashamed to put my picture in my profile and I look rather good.
        2. Girlfriend is fat but what is your problem and why would you care?
        3. Bible, just shut the hell up on this one as it isn't a valid point in this or any debate as far as I can see.

        And
        4. Judging by your profile, which is quite bare but I did read some of your other comments before leaving today. You are just a sad little girl who is struggling in college and are bleeding all over the place from your massive Premenstral Syndrome.

I wouldn't be surprised if you are the same girl that everyone and their dog bashed for being a child because her boyfriend left her for an ugly chick. You have no concept of others nor do you understand common curtosy.

I doubt you are in college but if you are, it would explain why you are mad as you truly can't write worth a damn and are probably failing English class. I am really sorry the world hates you. Now, stop picking on others and bashing people for the very problems you suffer from, being fat or boring.

Worst comes to worst, I'm not afraid to post myself with my own picture in my profile. It holds a person more accountable as it makes them be more truthful out of a slim chance that someone might recognise them later. Life is so much easier if you just sit back and blame others for your faults but I perfer to live life better than that and fix myself. You can't even use the shift key, so shut the hell up if you think you are better than me.

Now go change your tampon and leave others the hell alone you sad and selfish child.

      • Thank you, you must be stocking my stories and comments by looking at my profile. Either way, aren't you wasting the very time you bitched at me earlier that you could be using for something else?

If you aren't stocking my profile, than you are actualy going post by post to harrass people and this is the most sad thing I have seen on this site. Anyways, I checked my email before going out to my family and replying back to your "mess with a keyboards" toward my comments has set me back on time.

Well, have a nice Christmas as I said before and just enjoy what little joy you get from bashing people you don't know here. I feel truly sorry for you and I'm just going to let it go now.

I'm running late, I have to get going. Merry Christmas everyone and don't let the troll on this thread get you.

I have respect for all animals and I do pray for the animal to be at peace for suffering a horrible death by becoming our food.
