Elvis presley: was he really the king of rock?

Personally I don't think Elvis is the king of rock. I think Paul McCartney deserves that honour, but Elvis is still special. But let's here some opinions...

Yes, his music is the best in history 14
No, he's highly overrated 23
Yes, because he kicked off the rock genre 20
No, I don't like his music 10
Yes and No - he's just as good as other rock artists 19

Elvis was the first rock star for sure....he was flashy, sexy, edgy....he was way more than "just" a singer. He truly did break new ground, and his entertainment value went far beyond just his songs.

The Stones man! Awesome fact: Occasionally I randomly bust out in a full Mick Jagger dance.

  • But Paul McCartney won the Guinnes World Record for best songwriter in history and was in The Beatles, the most successful rock band of all time.

Plus he did do quite a few hard rock numbers, especially in Wings. Plus, Helter Skelter, which he wrote, is possibly the first heavy metal song written.

Yes, Paul ''The World is Peaches and Cream'' McCartney, as The King.

    NO WAY.

The King of rock music is definitely Pete Townshend! You've got the raw guitar power, the destruction of stage equipment, stage fanatics and balls to the wall rock n' roll!

Some of ya'll need to learn about your rock history....elvis didn't create rock and roll....he created "rockabilly" a form of country, sonatic, bluesy, harder music. By saying he is the "king" of rock, means he helped influence this new type of music, not create it. also "metallica" wasn't the first rock band, someone said that and there fucking retarded. the first band classified as "metal" is....i hate to say it, but it's true.....jethro tull....they aren't to good except for;aqualung, and brick in the wall but yep....first classified metal band, weird i know. what do i personally believe to be the first rock band? hmmmm........the beatles. they just took it and created the most wonderfull stuff ever, i love them(but there not even close to my favorite band). the records are weird about rock and we may never know exactly who was first....rolling stones, the beatles, led zeppelin....i have no idea.

I wasn't really around for that, so I can't be sure. Though I do was VH1 with all the retro music countdowns and whatnot, so I enjoy his music. I just can't give a solid answer.

    Other:

If I remember correctly Elvis himself did not support this nomenclature. He felt that Christ was the "King" not himself.

Therefore I say "No, not the king" but I do greatly respect him. He did what very few rock stars have the balls to do these days... He accepted being drafted and served honorably, reaching the rank of E5 before the end of his enlistment.

I would associate Paul McCartney more with pop than rock n' roll. Also, Paul is more well-known and acclaimed as a member of the Beatles than he is otherwise. He'll always be remembered as that guy from the Beatles - Elvis earned his success and title as a solo artist. Elvis was a performer not a song-writer. The two of them are not really in the same category. Of course if it weren't for racism, the king of rock n' roll would likely be one of the many influential black rock n' roll artists, not Elvis.

Elvis is the King of Rock 'n' Roll, because he kicked off Rock music as we know it today, although Bill Haley was legendary as well. Unfortunately, Elvis was later castrated by drugs and the army and he went downhill from there. But his early songs are still the greatest!

He didn't create the genre, he wasn't the greatest, and he wasn't the first "rockstar". By he was fucking special. There's no doubt about it.
