I too had a social phobia of eating in restaurants. There are two ways of dealing with it. Seeking medical help or addressing it yourself. I chose to address it myself and made the effort to push myself into situations I felt phobic about. Now it's not a problem. It's about doing something often enough that it becomes second nature; you don't worry about it any more and just approach the situation with confidence. I think the same can be applied to most phobias.

You sound like you have social anxieties so in that sense, I can relate.

spilling a drink isn't a big deal. little accidents like that happen. and, no one will be watching you eat because they're eating too. that's what restaraunts are for..you go there to eat.

First off, if anyone is closely watching you eat that closely, they've got problems bigger than any you could possibly have. And if you trip a waiter, think of how embarassed he/she will be (instead of you). If you spill something, what the hell. One time, I went nuts! I had on a white polo shirt, in public, and spilled tea on myself twice (you know, the ice shifts in the glass and the tea splashes you). I got so mad, I just poured the whole glass on me (in front of everyone) and said, "Now, there! If I'm going around tea-stained, I'm going for the whole enchilada). Yes, I got attention. Just a FYI story.

Spilling your drink wouldn't be the end of the world. Don't sweat the small stuff.

So just take it home. And yes, it's normal.
