Dumpster diving iin?

I wrote a post a few weeks ago about making money for food stretch because I fucked up and wouldn't be getting money for a while. Taking longer than I thought, I've got a pay day, two weeks on Wednesday but I've got nothing on me now, got nothing left to sell either so I'm thinking of taking up dumpster diving just until it blows over.
I know supermarkets are meant to throw out a lot of food that's perfectly fine, there's a dominoes like a 15 minute walk from me, they have a dumpster out back and I know they throw out a lot of good stuff that's just the wrong order or the wrong shape so I was thinking of going out at night cos I dont want to be seen doin it but going out at night and going through dumpsters near supermarkets and keeping watch out the back of dominoes until I see them throw one out.
is it normal to consider this? Anyone got any tips or anything? Be greatly appreciated

Dumpster diving is fun if there is water in it. Everything marinates

Have you considered that people are throwing out "good items" for a reason? Especially food, just don't.
I live across from a beauty supply place and my hillbilly friend used to take hair products and other stuff they threw away. She was about to use some hair color on herself til she noticed the product was expired by over a year. be careful. Id recommend either getting food stamps if you really need help or maybe part time cleaning for friends or relatives in exchange for cash and meals. hey Id pay someone to clean my bathroom for me.

I thought everyone knew that supermarkets etc throw out tons and tons of perfectly good food, either because it's a day over the use by date or in the case of fruit/vegies some little mark which doesn't affect anything except appearance.

In Australia there are organizations which collect this food and re-distribute it to needy people.

Your hair dye story is totally irrelevant to the original request: chemicals could deteriorate and become dangerous but you can usually tell if there's something wrong with food just by looking at it, smelling it or tasting a little bit.

Be careful, had a manager who would poison the food she threw out just so people would get sick if they ate it. I thought it was a messed-up thing to do but she was kind of a bitch.

I'm flabbergasted that anyone would be so nasty! And sorry I wasn't clearer, see reply above about the organisations who distribute food supermarkets would otherwise chuck in dumpsters

Why you flabbergasted? White folks exterminate aborigines. They exterminate poor black folk too.

The Australian redistribution organizations are irrelevant as well.

Well not irrelevant as a good idea which cd be adopted in other places who haven't heard of it. I should've been clearer too, they don't give out food from dumpsters but food which would've gone into the dumpsters - they establish relationships with supermarkets etc who let them have the food which would otherwise end up in landfill

You do raise a good point. The redistribution organization allows lazy people to get food without diving. What ever happened to the work ethic?

If I were you, I'd spend my next handful of money on a 20 pound bag of rice.

And just how does that help him/her eat in the meantime?

Your arrogance is sickening, but I will help you. He has a choice.

        1. Eat a little now, have plenty for later.
        2. Eat it all now, starve later.
        3. Whine, cry, and blame the government for not feeding him.

I was once in his shoes. It's not rocket science. Wake up and do the math.

Well, desperate times.. Personally I don't think it's that gross. I used to work at a supermarket and they do throw out tons of food just for being "past date" so you might find some things still wrapped which would be ideal.. I've eaten some of the food that were meant to throw away (not out of the trash though). But its really up to you as to what you find more embarrassing - the dumpster diving or asking others for help..? You could even try to ask the people working there.. Sometimes people would tell me why they couldn't afford the food so I just sort of look the other way as they take a couple pieces of chicken or whatever, because we just throw it out at the end of the day and no one would ever notice..

I'd be a lot more inclined to collect and sell alloy cans and the like, than dumpster dive. In the first place, should you get sick from something you ate from a dumpster, you might lose your job.
If I was in your position, I'd get a second job, preferably in a restaurant. Even the dishwasher gets a free meal, so that would kill 2 birds with one stone.
