Drugs in life and are they truly needed?

I have always lived drug free. Each and every day I wake up with the decision to not partake in drug use. I often have problems and are annoyed just like others but instead of using intoxicants, I make a decision to face my problems straight on and not behind a cloud of judgement.

However, since being a part of this site and seeing how others live, it is appearent to me that a great deal of others can't seem to wait until they get time to drink or do drugs. Instead of being sober, they would rather smoke pot and instead of being clean, they do all sorts of other crap that will probably ruin their futures or at the very least, make them less fulfilling. I am personally confused by this and therefore I am writing this poll.

Although some of you are pure garbage and would rain on a parade by peeing out of a window from above, I still have to ask for others to comment on and hopefully will understand what I truly do not get. Thank you

FOR THIS POLL, I AM LUMPING THE ILLEGAL DRUGS TOGETHER. THEREFORE, SMOKING POT IS JUST AS BAD AS SHOOTING HEROIN FOR THE SAKE OF THIS POLL.

I live every day sober as well, the idea of me taking drugs bothers me 83
I drink and/or smoke cigarettes but that is as far as I will go. 21
I occasionally use illegal drugs but I focus on my life more. 68
Smoking pot and doing drugs is the way to go and I can still party. 33
I heavily use drugs but I am still functional, sorta. Fuck the police 19
I'm a hard core addict and cannot quit, I don't know what else to say. 3
I used to do drugs and truly wish I never tried it. I am clean now. 13
I used to do drugs while younger and I still do. I regret nothing! 25
Help us keep this site organized and clean. Thanks!

Also, your original title question of, "are they truly needed?" Of course they're not, and I don't think anyone would disagree. Drugs are as needed as playing a sport, buying extra pairs of shoes, having ketchup on your food, riding a bike with no hands, or anything else.

I live everyday sober and I find nothing wrong with using drugs.

Oh, no option for that? Not only do you seem to have a very minimal understanding of why people use drugs, but your poll choices obviously reflect that you have some really retarded stereotypes.

Something to keep in mind is that drug use is a very personal thing. Sometimes it's the result of an issue, sometimes its recreational. Sometimes it's an escape, sometimes it's for artistic inspiration. The wise range of reasons someone might use drugs can't be so oversimplified as you've done here.

    • How? No seriously, how do you figure, it is the most unbias poll that I have seen on this site so far and it IS NOT BASHING DRUGS at all. Which is funny as it is usually not normal for me to do.

I could go on and on but WHICH EXACT POINT is the stereotype as I don't see it and I think you are talking out of your ass.

Obviously you have bought into society's BS of if you smoke pot one day you will be shooting up heroin by the next month. Since you lack the experience you really don't have the means the pass judgement against someone (unless they are totally whacked out on IV or something) because you have no clue, and like I said you have been programmed by the classroom scare tactics. Did you know that marijuana hurts society a lot less than alcohol? Do you know WHY marijuana is illegal? It has to do with a lot of bureaucratic BS, mainly from Nixon silencing the hippies in the 60's because their anti war protests were a thorn in his side.

4, 5 and 6, mostly. One thing to notice is that no choice is just something along the lines of, "I use drugs," "I use drugs heavily," "I am addicted." They all have opinions attached to them, which says something about how you view those different people.

My favorite being, "I heavily use drugs but I am still functional, sorta. Fuck the police." XD You see? In the example, you assume people who heavily use drugs actively rebel against the police.

  • This is an interesting poll. I wonder if there are other pro-sober people out there that think they way you do.

You wrote: "I still have to ask for others to comment on and hopefully will understand what I truly do not get." So, I hope that you are open to comments that don't parallel your own opinions because if you really want to "understand", then you're going to have to consider all sides.

When you makes statements such as: "I make a decision to face my problems straight on and not behind a cloud of judgement.", or "...ruin their futures or at the very least, make them less fulfilling." in reference to the consequences of not choosing the sober life that you lead, it strongly implies you are bias toward your own lifestyle - which is a natural way to feel. However, when you are trying to research the truth of a situation, it is best to put away bias and prejudice so that you can come to a more realistic conclusion.

I would also like to comment on your statement:
"...SMOKING POT IS JUST AS BAD AS SHOOTING HEROIN FOR THE SAKE OF THIS POLL."
Haven't you noticed a pattern on this site that most marijuana users consider themselves separate from the "hard drug" crowd? I have because I'm one of those people. I've NEVER done any drugs other than marijuana. I partake in the herb somewhere between a few days a week and every second day. I rarely drink alcohol - just a few times a year. I don't drink coffee. I don't smoke cigarettes. I don't abuse food. I meditate to avoid extremes in emotion - which has been scientifically proven to stimulate chemicals in our bodies that can be just as addictive as heroine (some people are addicted to sex, rage, misery, attention, playing the victim, shopping, power, etc.). Unfortunately, the world is not as black and white as you are trying to make it.

Maybe you shouldn't try to understand anything about drug use and what motivates people to use them. Instead just accept that good and bad people use drugs and alcohol, the same as good and bad people choose to be sober. Live and let live dude. You'll be a happier person if you just let it go.

    • I just said that. I messed up by including the whole "bothers" word and at this point, you are just bitching. Plus, if you drink once in a while with friends or whatever, THEN PICK THE SECOND OPTION. I personally do not drink as I don't want to lose control, so the first option fits me well. However, I was wrong in putting in the "bothers" word and I am sorry.

I'm out, piss all over this poll or whatever, I don't care and I couldn't fix it now even if I wanted to. Stop beating a dead horse and move on.

I am briefly going to describe my relationship with drugs for those who don't understand it.

Personally, I don't see my drug use as a problem. I pay my bills and rent on time, and I keep a clean house. I just need to experience something other than sobriety once in a while, and I also use certain drugs to self medicate. (Like everyone does casually with an aspirin or cigarette.) If I'm feeling tense, then I'll smoke some cannabis. If I'm tired, then I will drink a little coffee. I'm I'm bored and I can't afford to take a vacation I will instead take a trip on acid. For me, it has the same affect as being away on an amazing holiday but at a much cheaper cost.

Sobriety is sometimes refreshing, and sometimes unfulfilling for me. I will sometimes spend long periods of time sober, if I feel that I need some time away from drugs. It's not because I've become addicted and need rehab, I just see sobriety as "home base". If you're dabbling in psychedelic drugs, you often need periods of sobriety to reassess yourself before returning. With drugs such as marijuana and caffeine I don't feel the same urgency. I could be stoned for a week straight without any problems, but I usually choose not to.

I frequently use psychedelic drugs, marijuana, caffeine, and occasionally entactogens. I love these drugs, and I feel that they have had a positive impact on my personality. I would say that I use these drugs solely for the effects. At times it can augment my mood or help me relax and take a break from reality. (Sometimes it's healthy to escape reality, and we all do it in ways such as watching movies. I also realize that it's unhealthy to try to completely escape reality and I avoid doing so.)

I would say that psychedelic drugs and entactogens are the only drugs that I use that impact my judgement, but I still have managed to make the right choices regardless. I have had a worse time with the drugs mentioned below, which is why I avoid them.

I avoid deliriants, dissociatives, most depressants, and opioids because I've had nothing but negative experiences with them. Other people may like them, but they're not for me. I do drink occasionally, but I don't enjoy it that much.

With people and drugs, you will never get them all to agree on the same drug. Some people prefer different drugs for their different effects, and will take them for different reasons. You can't assume that every drug user is an addict, because addiction is complex and usually caused by inner turmoil. It's not solely the drug that causes addictions, unless the drug has severe withdrawal symptoms.

    ALSO:
If we got rid of everything that was pretty much "pointless" and causes harm without moderation, then we'd be getting rid of a lot more things than just drugs. This includes fast food, video games - all sorts of things can lead to addiction and health problems when abused.

I used to do drugs and I loved it. I wasn't an addict but used drugs regularly on social nights out. I genuinely believed that as long as I stayed in control and didn't overdo it, drugs were fine.
Fast forward a few years, I now have 2 seperate heart conditions which are likely to have been triggered by the drug use. I now can't even touch a drop of alcohol due to my heart conditions.
It's each persons decision but inform yourself of the consequences.

I experimented with marijuana when I was younger. I have no regrets and I'm perfectly fine with a drug free life. I'm not a smoker and I enjoy a glass wine or a cup of coffee.
And as thisissomuchfun stated, addictions come in many different forms.
Everyone gets a payoff for their actions no matter how detrimental they may be to body and mind. What are yours?

You did mention addiction : P But my point wasn't whether or not you listed the different degrees, my point is that you added side comments that, ona different level, show how you feel or what you expect a person on each of the degrees you listed to feel or fall under.

I see you are hung up on legal illegal and the who societal stigmatization associated with drug use...how do you feel about people who use prescription drugs? Is that ok, even if they have a reason to do so... People who take Ambien love its affects and many keep taking it just for the affect. Same goes for prescription pain killers etc. It gets to the point where the pain comes from not having the pain killer not from real pain itself. And then what about those people who are addicted to sugar...in all its forms. How long can you go without a candy bar, come sweet cereal, cookies, cakes, ice cream etc. are you addicted? You bet. What about caffeine you like Coke and Pepsi, could it be the caffeine you crave, even with tea. But of course all these things are fine because society says so right. I assume even beer and wine are ok too since they are legal. Dont be a hypocrite and self righteous, you sound like a hard core Christian.

you know its people like you who make us weed smokers look bad. honestly it isnt needed. but name some things that you enjoy doing after say, a long day at work. you might have youre garden or you're hobbies and this and that. but just because those hobbies are "clean" and "socially acceptable" whats the difference?? now i dont agree with people who do hard drugs. but when someone who is a hard worker, and earns their living, and is a productive member of society. what gives you the right to tell them that they cannot go home and spark up a joint, or even crack a beer and just relax.. doing what they like. and while that may sound dumb to you. look at it from our point of view. maybe we think you're hobbies are dumb, pointless, and a waste of time. people live their own lives. so let them live them how they wish.

But on another note, Good for you staying clean thru out life. thats honestly great. if thats what makes you happy do what you do, you cannot live life trying to make others happy, because at the end of the day, all that matters is that youre happy with youre choices.

I hate it when people go around preaching against drugs like this. I use drugs occasionally but I don't go around forcing them on people!
It's a personal choice and you have to respect that. You don't have any idea what some people go through or what their life is like that that drives them to do drugs. And anyhow, why should you care? It doesn't concern you.

Interestingly, most of our grandparents or great grandparent were given morphine, cocaine and many other 'illegal' drugs by their parents in everyday medicines and by theor doctors as cure alls. Some of the most repsected people in history were probably addicts...as well as some of the baddies.
Many of todays drugs originate from medications intended to do good. But man likes to fool around and abuse things..
just the same as people who eat junk food abuse their bodies, and people who quaff cans of coca cola, and even racing drivers who take speed risks and boxers who cause each other brain damage ....it is all abuse of the body, and all abuse is harmful.
The hamburger junkie is as irresponsible as the heroin addict.
MOderation is the name of the success game...even in our judgement of others.

Drugs have quite literally saved my life. Without opiates and cannabis, I would have committed suidice long ago. Even before I had chronic pain, they've helped me recover from profound mental illness. I had barely touched drugs before then, by the way, and by that time I was already very ill. Drugs had nothing to do with getting ill and everything to do with the recovery process that still continues. Without various psychedelics I wouldn't have chosen to develop the spiritual side of myself more. Amphetamines helped me hone my art and music skills much more quickly, not to mention helping me do better in school at the time. (That was a bit ago, now... heh!) Pretty much all the drugs I've used, legal and otherwise, have been useful to me both spiritually and creatively, actually.

Note that I'm not -dependent- on drugs for any of these things. I know a lot of ways to do just about anything I want to do. But it just so happens that some things are best or most efficiently achieved if I use a drug to help me. When applied intelligently, purposefully, and responsibly, drugs are perfectly valid tools, not to mention ancient as well.

Open your mind. You may never choose to use drugs yourself, and that's your right, but try not to blind yourself to so much of reality. In fixating on the negatives, you're ignoring a huge, glorious realm of positives.

Humans, like many animals (probably all animals with complex nervous systems, though we only have direct evidence for a comparative handful of species due to scientific focus largely being aimed elsewhere, sadly enough) have a biological need, and therefore drive to, alter their state of consciousness. This can be accomplished via infinite routes -- drugs, music (listening, playing, and/or dancing to,) surfing, skateboarding, exercising in any way shape or form, eating, driving, making love... et cetera ad infinitum.

In short, you're deluding yourself if you think you're "clean". Your body naturally produces the following illegal substances: morphine and DMT. You also naturally produce chemicals very closely related to, or that actually produce the effects of when used in the case of cocaine and amphetamines, cannabinoids, amphetamines, cocaine, steroids... I could go on forever.

Also, do you consume caffeine? Sugar? How about honey or chocolate in any form whatsoever? Guess what -- they're all drugs.

Being "clean" is an illusory goal. You cannot choose to never be intoxicated, and it would be extremely unhealthy if you could. Your brain likes and needs to be stimulated in that way. You can, however, choose -how- to stimulate yourself. It is perfectly valid to choose to get your highs from non-drug sources. But you need to be honest with yourself about the realityy of the situation, and you also need to recognize that getting high without drugs is not the only valid option. Humans have been using drugs, to great benefit, for longer than we have BEEN humans. Jesus, REINDEER get high on Amanita muscaria! CATS get wildly intoxicated on catnip (and so can humans, by the way -- it chemically potentiates cannabis, as well, so smoke them together sometime if you're of a mind to experiment.) Rats will abuse the hell out of cocaine or opiates if given free access -- but not always. It depends on their strain, what genetic 'line' they come from.

    ARE YOU AN IDIOT?

Seriously, ARE YOU AN IDIOT? Nowhere in the entire poll did I mention being an addict and upon reading any marijuana post here on this site you will also read about how "evil" the police are.

PLUS, if you gave two shits about the police and following the rules that we must follow, you wouldn't be doing the damn drugs to begin with.
However I meant it as a side comment as the comments about heavy marijuana use seem to always tend to bash police with it.

    Source: http://isitnormal.com/story/the-evilest-organization-to-ever-exist-24721/

I GUESS, trying to compromise to your level, could try to point out my point on how I commented each poll response and the LEVEL of drug activity. If you are a simple user, then you would pick the third option and if you were heavier, you would go down further.

I really don't see your basis of your argument but I have grown tired of trying to explain myself on this site. I will end with - IF YOU ARE NOT A HEAVY DRUG USER BUT JUST A SELDOM USER, OPTION 4,5, and 6 DO NOT APPLY TO YOU SO YOU WOULD NOT PICK THEM.
